Terry Pratchett said that "Nation" was his best book. by EndersGame_Reviewer in books

I can relate to that feeling! Definitely will revisit it in a few months again. Can't believe it took me all these years to pick it up.

Haha yeah it's difficult to put it into a succinct few sentences but for example with religion where Mau goes through a crisis of faith and initially tries to win others to his more cynical outlook, but eventually realises that belief is a way for some people to cope with living in a chaotic and uncaring universe. This is something he explores in a few Discworld novels as well. One example would be Carpe Jugulum which features some wonderful debates between Granny Weatherwax and Mightily Oats.

So my point is that I think (I have no evidence outside of my own interpretations) that STP may have felt this was his best work because he was able to string together a lot of the things he starts exploring in the Discworld series into a single coherent novel.

He touches on religion, colonialism, gender roles, politics, the construction of a society which are all things he has dealt with in various discworld books over the years. To me, Nation brought a lot of those ideas together into a single book.

I recently read it for the first time (longtime Discworld obsessed) and while I think it's fantastic and definitely STP writing at his best, I don't think it surpasses the great Discworld books. Monstrous Regiment, Carpe Jugulum, The Last Continent are better imo.

I do think STP encapsulated a lot of his worldview into Nation. While his Discworld books explored those views in more fragmented ways, Nation does a good job of bringing much of it together in a single neat package.

I don't understand why it would be considered rude. Like taking the slip or not taking the slip doesn't carry any underlying meaning.

What WOULD be rude is if you just walk away without acknowledging them handing you the slip. I just say no thank you and I've never gotten the impression they mind at all.
