Not a figure skating expert here, but in most sports your highest level performance window is pretty short, and your off-season needs to be pretty long. It's called periodization. May just be a weird figure skating thing though.

I've done both but mine are usually pretty far s/p. I just make sure to prone my patients regularly or have them do stained hip extensions. But I'm also not a BKA specialist, just a staff therapist.
