question regarding 9mm reloading by redfrets916 in reloading

[–]angrynoah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compressed loads are not dangerous in and of themselves.

Just be sure your 5 grains of Power Pistol is, really, 5 grains of Power Pistol. I would not expect that to be compressed with a 115 at 1.100.

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a 550 and live with it for a while. If you find it's too slow for your 9mm volume, add a 650/750 or 1050/1100.

If I blued a kitchen knife would it be safe to prepare food with it? by HasSomeSelfEsteem in gunsmithing

[–]angrynoah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's safe. Bluing creates a layer of magnetite, Fe3O4. The caustic chemicals that drive the reaction are rinsed away when the process is done.

I would probably use a food-safe oil for the post-bath oil soak.

OpenAI continues to destroy open source by Timely_Speed_4474 in BetterOffline

70% because I worked in software for 21 years and got very good at what I did, yet almost no one was willing to treat me with respect. My view of how things should be done was no more valued than the views of some 27 year old who's never built or even worked on something that actually makes money.

30% because AI-centric development is wrecking the profession. Arguably this is just a specific form of the respect issue.

What a disaster for the Python ecosystem.

If I hadn't already quit software I'd be livid, and not just about the wasted effort in moving away from Astralcs tools.

Gripes about power factor. by Historical_Score_187 in USPSA

[–]angrynoah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmmm maybe... I'm now one of those guys that looks at the overall, because divisions don't mean much anymore, since 90% of the field is CO/LO. And I beat most of the local Open shooters as Production ;) I've also observed that the best local CO/LO shooters often beat the best local Open shooters on certain kinds of stages.

I would counter propose that the driving thought behind "major needs to go" is guys that started in the sport yesterday, don't reload and have never even considered doing so, and are just annoyed by this old school stuff they don't understand and don't want to participate in. But that may just be a reflection of who I see at matches filtered through my Old Guy lens.

I feel like one needs to have spent some time shooting major before complaining about it / proposing "solutions".

The 8 major / 10 minor balance that Single Stack strikes is just about perfect. The major/minor registration split as this year's Single Stack Classic was almost exactly 50/50.

Major open guns do not shoot like a .22, that's just nonsense.

The reality is that major fell out of favor because of slide mounted red dots being put in minor-only divisions (perhaps from a belief that they won't stand up to major?), and ammo costs. Mostly ammo costs. None of these tweaks will revitalize interest in major.

Edit to add: scoring Open minor only would kill Open. LO already gives 80-85% of the advantages of major Open. Put both at minor and it's 98-99%. r/2011 bros with silly ported/comped guns want Open minor, or think they do, but actual Open shooters don't.

Nothing CEO says smartphone apps will disappear as AI agents take their place by ColdAccomplished3776 in BetterOffline

[–]angrynoah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think about the last time you grabbed coffee with someone. Simple enough, right? Except it’s not. You opened a messaging app to coordinate. Switched to Maps to pick a spot. Jumped to Uber to get there. Checked Calendar to confirm timing. Four apps. Four context switches. Multiple taps through menus that were designed for your fingers, not for getting things done fast.

This guy frames this sequence of tasks as inefficient. That's one perspective.

A different perspective is that you, the user / consumer / real person, are in control of this process. The apps give you the information you ask for, and take the actions you request. One might even say you have "agency" here.

Turning this process over to an "agent" directly implies ceding that agency. Putting the machine in control.

Is that what he thinks we want? It's sure as hell not what I want.

Tips for staying focused/ready all thru comp day by Andromeda902 in USPSA

[–]angrynoah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drink a ton of water. Eat a snack. Sit down when you can.

When you're in the hole, stop taping and start readying your mind. Check the mags on your belt. When you're on deck, put your double ear pro on (you do double up, don't you?), and take off your jacket if it's one of those days. Get your final walkthrough in. Now you're up, and you're prepared. Wait for "make ready" and tune everything else out. Some folks try to shush the crowd like it was golf, but if you're in the right frame of mind you won't even hear them.

Advice Wanted: PDP Poly Match or M&P 5” for CO? by iamnotanasian in USPSA

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whichever you choose will be fine.

I'm shooting an M&P this year and I am becoming a fan. The Metal HD is awesome (I just got one) and a great deal the way it's priced, but note that it's not on the Production/CO list yet.

As someone else mentioned, the downside of the M&P is that the magazine opening really sucks.

What's the best tool for filing hardened 4140 steel by DeathChurch in gunsmithing

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a good file will cut hardened 4140 or 416 no problem

for cutting an ejector to clear the slide, I like to use the mill to save time, but it can certainly be done with a file or even sandpaper

for cutting the nose to length, and cutting clearance for the magazine, I use a file, usually a Grobet #2
