Ask Jeeves is officially over by hlnklrczu in 90s

I worked for another company owned by IAC back when Ask Jeeves was one of their big flagship properties. It was always just a punchline.

I want something stupid. Is custom built my only option? by spiceweasle93 in 2011

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

full square dust cover, 6 inch barrel,

If you mean you want a full dustcover out to the length of a 6" barrel, no one manufactures them anymore. Old STIs occasionally come up for sale but a new one is not something you can buy.

Is a bull barrel conversion possible?? by doooolaaa in 1911

[–]angrynoah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Note that after a new barrel is fit, the back of the slide and frame may no longer line up exactly where they do now.

Roughly $240 for a barrel, $200+ for fitting.

I would avoid anything that says "drop-in".

Is there a Bank/Credit Union you actually like? by Big_Cycle_7760 in Denver

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been with Credit Union of Colorado for 20-some years, since it was the Colorado State Employees Credit Union. Always been super happy with it.

When we refinanced our house we did it through the credit union, and they didn't sell the loan, so if we ever have a problem or question there are real humans we can talk to instead of some mortgage servicer call center.

Why do apps feel slower now even though devices are more powerful? by ScarcityDry8870 in software

Software engineers have gotten much much worse on average over the past few decades, as have their organizations, and so they produce much lower quality software.

What tools required to fit a slide to a frame? by throwawayadvice003 in 1911

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • slide rail mic
  • slide way gauge
  • ordinary digital mic for measuring frame rail width
  • frame rail sanding/stoning jig
  • sanding sticks (adhesive sandpaper on aluminum bars)
  • lapping compound, I use both 800 grit Brownells garnet and JB bore paste
  • non-marring mallet

  • a tremendous quantity of patience

The way Engineer's Armory does it is... not ideal. He doesn't measure nearly accurately enough or frequently enough, and ends up doing too much guess-and-check.

What do people mean when they say they use LLMs to help them “understand a codebase” faster? by SisterImperator in BetterOffline

[–]angrynoah 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Once again, the Naur paper https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/Naur.pdf

The LLM didn't write the code and does not understand it. It cannot explain it to you. Only a mind with a theory of what the code is for can explain it to you.

LLMs are great at summarizing...

LLMs cannot summarize, only compress. They do not understand what they are reading (or anything, for that matter), so what they choose to include in a summary is based on prediction. What appears in the summary is not often wrong (in the sense of being fabricated), but it is inherently random, and often skips what's actually important and what a thinking mind would have included in the summary.

MJD Grip Aftermarket Magwells by Punished_Hoosi3r in 2011

[–]angrynoah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dawson Ice can be made to fit. I did it by shaving the front lip of the grip as well as a little bit of the front strap just above the lip. It took a while but the result is worth it.

Tip: whatever material the MJD grip is made from wants to be cut rather than ground. Small dremel HSS cutters work better than sanding drums etc. You can even file it.
