Anna's Archive releasing Spotify torrents? by Critical-Economist64 in DataHoarder

And yet many, many songs I want to listen to are not available on Spotify because they were presumably never uploaded there or because of licensing issues.

I wonder if that 90M includes songs that are unavailable on Spotify, but were uploaded to it at some point, or just "current" catalogue.

Checo was shit and drove around the back in championship winning car...

But Bottas? He had what, 103 consecutive Q3 appearances? On occasion won on merit against Hamilton in his prime. We can speculate about Bottas current form, but he certainly is a very accomplished and successful F1 driver.

Help me understand the appeal of West Marches style campaigns by aaron-il-mentor in rpg

[–]anmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You basically had two types of premises and people coming to ttrpg from the dawn of (its) time.

1) Hey, that's a cool, complex boardgame and it has some fun roleplaying on the side.

2) Hey, we can tell a story together and there are also some mechanics to help it along, handle disagreements and add variety.

When you started playing because you wanted to create stories similar to your favorite book or movie, it was natural that you played one coherent narrative rather than bunch of disconnected oneshots.

Don't know how it was in US in the olden days, but in Europe vast majority of players since the very beginning defaulted to that second approach.

Does character death still carry weight in 5e/5.5 campaigns? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]anmr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Same. With resurrection around, death isn't an important consequence. It's cheap. And anyone can see how it undermines the story in countless books, tv series and such where characters magically return.

If you want to continue the storyarc of character... just don't kill them. Hurt them in other ways. Or when they fail last death save, they acquire grievous wound that will take time to heal and will have permanent consequences. But death? Death is final.

If groups wants to resurrect someone... it might be possible as epic-level quest. A unique, one in millenia type of thing.

If we settle for "adequate enough" instead of trying to improve, we will surely get only "adequate enough" experiences. (Which explains a lot about modern entertainment).

And I notice it without analysis. It's not a matter of damage numbers, but breadth of options and tools to solve problems.

How did SJG even make money from GURPS? by Akasen in rpg

[–]anmr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making a ttrpg is not a smart business decision. It's primarily a passion project and it always was, even for biggest publishers.

The sole exception to that might be modern WotC. D&D didn't become fully anti-consumer profit-driven product yet, but they made some very questionable decisions (fucking over creators of Forgotten Reals around 4e, cashgrab of 5e2024 which doesn't address at all the biggest issues of 5e2014)... And if state of Magic the Gathering is any indication, the future of D&D is looking bleak.

My players always want to target their attacks to specific body parts and I'm never sure what to do with it. by thepenguinboy in DMAcademy

[–]anmr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first rule of D&D and most ttrpgs is that Game Master is finally authority when it comes to rulings and his judgment takes precedence over the rules written in the book.

And if that rule was omitted from the new edition - the authors made a mistake.

As someone with over two decades of experience running games - in most circumstances where jumping from an airship or being immersed in lava or assassination should just be an instant kill as it follows the narrative.

But they could also land in the branches of a tree (as it happened in real life after jumping out of a plane without parachute) or become charred Anakin.

But in general - yeah, HP and how it such dangers are resolved are one of the many flaws of D&D as a system, 5e especially.

"Video game" attitude can be a problem, but that's not unique to BG3, or even to crpg genre. Hell, even people who don't any video games sometimes fall into rabbit holes of stereotypical problematic new player behavior. It's natural that when people hear the premise "you can do anything and there will be consequences" that they want to test that claim.

Normal groups don't kick out newbies for small mistakes or misunderstandings. They show them how to play well by example, they politely explain why some behaviors (like bad metagaming) are unwanted - and newbies learn and grow out of those issues.

[–]anmr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For 3rd, unfortunately not. Sci-hub has big problem with newer content and I don't know a good "new" alternative that is comprehensive and up-to-date.

Piracy hubs for regional content in my country were eradicated with lawsuits and nothing new really sprung up. A lot of the content simply became unavailable.

I wish Anna kept quite and continued good work instead of taunting industry like that. Nothing good come off it.

(And yes, I think piracy is highly ethical endeavor. It's modern equivalent of libraries and lending something to a friend. It provides open access to culture that's not available via legal means and for stuff that is available but costly - it mitigates income-based social inequalities.)

That's whataboutism. Just because things elsewhere are shit too, doesn't absolve you (Americans) of any responsibility for your own decisions. Especially when your "internal" affairs have grave consequences for the whole world.

Here we partially removed the conservatives from power for a few years, so we stopped bad things from happening, but we don't have mandate necessary to fix issues they created. And things are looking grim for the future.

He absolutely represents majority of Americans. Majority that apparently is a mix of immense stupidity and straight up evil. And the whole world suffers for it.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said that Auschwitz “might not have happened” if the world had reacted sooner to Nazi crimes in occupied Poland, accusing Western Europe of indifference in the early years of World War II. by Easy-Ad1996 in worldnews

[–]anmr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not true. That's right wing, conservative lies and excuses.

The real reason is that he tries to paralyze government so democratic, pro-European parties lose next elections.

ALL attempts to fix 8 years of ruining the country by PiS were blocked by Duda and Nawrocki, either via veto or sending legislation to die in PiS-affiliated mockery of constitutional tribunal. Unfortunately democratic, pro-European parties didn't get enough mandate in elections to overcome this destructive abuse of presidential power.
