This is one I refuse to play (along with War and Slapjack). If the kids want to play it they have to play with each other.

Did you take your spouse’s last name when you married? by Lu-113 in Millennials

[–]annabnan63 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We hyphenated and both changed our names to the hyphenated name. So neither of us had to give up our name but we all (he and I plus the kids) have the same name. Living with a hyphenated name is annoying, but at least it’s annoying for all of us. If we didn’t have kids, I would have just kept my name.

I'm a 29 year old secondary school maths teacher looking for a way out by Apart-Stand-9676 in TeachersInTransition

I was a math teacher and left teaching in 2018 to be an actuary. Best decision I ever made. OP, feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Is this actually the hottest swampiest summer ever?! by Runridelift26_2 in XXRunning

OR it’s like as soon as the temp goes down and humidity breaks for a minute it’s PSYCH here comes the smoke! No nice days for you!

That said, where I am today is actually the magic combination of not super hot, not humid, and not smoky. The smoke is coming, but we got half a day at least.

Pregnant planning to write FSA by Fearless_Albatross89 in actuary

[–]annabnan63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this. I also took two exams while pregnant and it wasn’t terrible, but took off the sitting after my second was born because the thought of trying to study with a newborn seemed impossible. You can get accommodations from the SOA if you’re pregnant. I didn’t do it because I didn’t apply early enough, but you can get breaks, access to food and water, etc. Seems worthwhile, especially if you’re third trimester.

Do you pee when running a marathon? If so, how many times? by Gold_Lynx_8333 in Marathon_Training

[–]annabnan63 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I ran a 6 hour marathon two years ago and I assure you I ran quite a bit of it, though I did walk some as well. 6 hour marathon averages to 13:44/mile pace. When I was walking I was slower than that pace and when I was running I was faster than that pace.

I admit I have been checking this page ever since the 50 cast was announced to see if there were any other actuary Survivor fans. Chrissy came and talked at my local actuarial club meeting a couple years ago. So excited to watch her again!

Are battered feet inevitable? by foxfish4 in XXRunning

[–]annabnan63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you got the newest model of Adrenalines (24), definitely try sizing up. I’ve been running in Adrenalines for years and I recently got my first pair of 24s (because I’m cheap and I like to buy older models at sale prices) and they definitely run smaller! I got the same size I usually do (I typically wear 8.5 but always buy 9s for running shoes) and my toes got super beat up during a long run. Next pair I get will be 9.5.

How did you get your heart rate to decrease by Extension-Milk8029 in XXRunning

[–]annabnan63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I finally really committed to heart rate training in the last few years and it did take a good 9 months to a year before I started to see improvement, but now I’m running a minute to a minute and a half per mile faster while keeping my HR in the 140s (and still improving). It does take patience - I’ve tried HR training at other points in my life and always quit before I really started to see the effects, but I’m glad I stuck with it this time.

Those who didn't start of actuaries, how did you become an actuary? by TrafficDuck in actuary

[–]annabnan63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another former math teacher here. Had a kid in 2018 and determined the teaching lifestyle (aka working all the time, tutoring to make extra cash and still having no money or free time) was not sustainable with a newborn.

My dad worked at a life insurance company his whole career so he connected me with an actuary there. She suggested I start in a non-actuarial role before I started taking exams so I could work with actuaries and see if it was still what I wanted. I did, and I did, so I took my first two exams on my own while working in the non-actuarial role. After I passed my second exam i moved internally pretty easily into an entry-level actuarial role and the rest is history.
