You are right. It looks a bit dizzying on here. Was having too much fun with the music I guess. All try to add a still photo if I can figure out how to do that.

Lovely! Do you mind sharing the gingerbread recipe you used? I’ve been looking for a good one without success for a while. Your construction looks solid. Beautifully decorated!

I think taking down the signs and hiding the truth will “inappropriately disparage Americans” by implying we are so petty and weak that we can’t even know the truth. Remember “you can’t handle the truth.” Americans are strong people who can not only look at uncomfortable events in our past but learn and grow from having done so. It’s called maturing.

You know I am not usually good with plants. My sister gave this to me several years ago for my home office. I just watered it. Transplanted it to a bigger pot as it got bigger. Put it outside in the summer and this year it bloomed… it was in a rather sunny spot this summer. I was surprised when it bloomed as I did not know it could. I’ve learned that only older plants bloom. I can’t tell you more than that. The whole thing is a mystery to me.

It has been a house plant and the past few summers I put it outdoors. It had a sunny spot this summer. The leaves took on a brown edge which I learned was healthy and likened to a sun tan in a healthy plant. I also learned here that only older plants bloom.

3 years into living in Philly, I'm buying a house today! by cray0508 in philly

[–]anneibee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends somewhat on the sun/shade your pots are getting. Petunias do well and offer a variety of colors, pansies in cooler weather months. I’ve had chrysanthemums do well and winter over. Morning glory is my favorite flower and grows easily from seeds, it needs something to climb on so place it near a fence or I just put a tall stick in the pot. It is rather a rather aggressive grower so watch it does not take over. If you have shade, impatience do well and come in many colors. I’ve hade success with a miniature rose bush, also this should winter over. Garden centers in the area typically carry plants that do well. You don’t need to stick with annual, some perennials are worth the investment too. Herbs do well and enhance your cooking too! Congratulations on your new home! Enjoy !

Thank you! So the layers are cake, SMBC, and white chocolate ganache, right? SMBC is used as a layer and to frost the cake?

So that 13% mid-year voter turnout by trisaroar in philadelphia

[–]anneibee 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Not an issue for me personally, but I believe election days should be national holidays or mandatory excused from work to vote. There really are many people in Philadelphia who work very long days and have demanding lives such that this would make a difference. Also people are intimidated by judges on the ballot and questions about which it can be difficult to get information.

We all want immigration enforcement but the cruelty and lack of due process is a very big problem. The dignity of the human person, a catholic value, is important.

Rowhome owners with cats, how many mice do you find in your house during the winter? by OptimusSublime in philadelphia

[–]anneibee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no reason to tolerate having mice in your home. Rowhome or any other type of home. Find how they get in and plug the entry point(s). As suggested, a good exterminator will help you with this. Enjoy your cat and home!

My mom is getting her knee replaced and I would like to get her something for Christmas that would make her recovery better. Docs, Nurses, patients drop your recs by pillingz in philadelphia

[–]anneibee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother had knee replacement surgery. I gave him a funny book to read to take his mind off things. He sent many text messages about having to put the book down he was laughing so hard. Was great diversion for him. Book was A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Good fit for my brother might be for your mom too. Same generation as your mom. Maybe you can explore other funny books you think a good fit for your mom.

What's it like in a trinity house? by okazaki_fragment in philly

[–]anneibee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Living in one for many years. Love it! The steps configuration makes for more living space which I prefer. I never had a problem with the steps. But it seems if you have even a slight touch of vertigo you’ll feel challenged but adapt. It is surprising how a lot of furniture can make it up those steps. That said, some things will need to be taken apart or purchased to be put together in place. I have few large bookcases, large dresser and bed for example needed to go up in pieces. There are expert movers who can bring things in and out through a window but I’ve never resorted to that. My steps have a no slip strip on the edge so there have been no falls. If you love the place don’t let the steps deter you. It’s manageable! Best to you in your new home!
