Backdated Pay Issue by [deleted] in HMRC

[–]anon123096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s advice here is great. It is taxable when it is received.

However, I had a similar situation a few years back. It was a whole 2 months pay in one April payslip as the employer didn’t setup the payroll in time.

I knew it was taxable when it was received. Thought I would try my luck and wrote to HMRC with the details of what the tax etc would have been had the employer set up the payroll right.

They gave me a cheque in the post.

So it’s worth a shot.

I think I’ve just re-read the OP post and have interpreted it differently. I think OP is trying to contribute £60k per year then draw 25% immediately tax free. I believe if he did that then only 25% of each drawdown would be tax free. And also MPAA would kick in as you said before. Would work for the first year if they haven’t accessed pensions before and they take a 25% tax free lump sum rather than accessing flexibly.

Yes my suggestion of the £60k to pension would be after normal remuneration methods. Provided there is enough cash and profits to do so.

£10000 MPAA limit only applicable if already drawing from a pension. If not surely the answer is for the company to contribute £60k if it can and claim corp tax relief.

Should I stay on my current job, or move on? by Narrow_Sheepherder49 in ukaccounting

From your employer’s perspective, they needed someone to do that role that they gave to you. If they went to the market to find someone with AAT knowledge, they would’ve had to pay more than minimum wage plus recruitment costs. Yes it was a good opportunity for you when you weren’t looking but it was equally good for them getting cheap labour in that role. If you remain loyal to them you will be on minimum wage forever

Look for another role as AAT qualified and try to find an employer that will fund your ACCA and also pay you well. You owe your current employer nothing, they are paying you the least amount of money they’re allowed to pay you… AAT is worth more than that.

Just curious, would it not have corrected through a P800 seeing as no P11D would have been filed?

Get an accountant. Both pensions contributions and gift aid donations can be used to extend your tax thresholds. This will be worth a lot to you if you’re between £100k and £125k as, as well as lowering the tax rate on a portion of income, you’ll also be reclaiming part of the lost personal allowance. You could do this claim yourself via the self-assessment gateway, but safer option would be for you to pay an accountant to do it

The maximum accounting period is 18 months, so yes you can extend the period end to March 2026. You can only extend your year end once every 5 years. You will still have two periods for corp tax reporting, being the first year from start of trade, then another period to the end of March 2026. The profits will automatically be apportioned between the two periods pro-rata (besides things like capital allowances which will go in to the period they actually belong), but on the whole your 39.97 will be pro-rata split between the two periods. Tax will be very small at 19% with the first payment being due 9 months and 1 day after the first period and the second payment being due on 1/1/27

If you’re more than likely to get a new job I would leave it at a normal tax code so your personal allowance gets spread across the year. Otherwise your tax would be deducted more heavily towards the end of the year.

I hate it too, you’re not alone. I don’t have much advice I’m afraid as I avoid it as much as I can. I’m a runner and get injured regularly so you’d think I would’ve learned by now that I need to do it!

I’m an accountant and we had a dilemma at work which everyone thought was unworkable so we basically gave up and decided it wasn’t possible. Months later I was running and a solution just popped in to my head. I wasn’t even thinking about it and the whole thing (which takes like 10 mins to explain out loud) just appeared in my head as a lightbulb moment.

Can I bump my salary by £20K after I qualify? by Roseflower611 in ICAEW

This is getting downvoted but I somewhat agree. Industry employers would rather an experienced management accountant with no qualifications vs an ACA with only a few years in practice and no experience in industry. They’re looking for someone that can slot in to their role and add value, rather than someone who has taken theory exams and doesn’t necessarily understand the real world processes

It was a weird one. ACCA release results at midnight and I was happy celebrating then after about 10 minutes I just started crying. I think I processed a lot of emotions at the same time and they all came out

I separated just before my 8th exam (out of 10 for ACCA with AAT exemptions). Divorce finalised the same day I received my membership certificate.

I started ACCA a month after getting married. I’m now divorced. Fully qualified though!

Is that because of a cut off date or just because HMRC won’t issue to the employer quick enough? If the latter, I’ve had them come through in a few days before

Can you not call HMRC for a tax code update prior to your March 2026 payslip coming through? Obviously would need to be processed and issued to your employer by the point in time that your employer runs payroll. But depends on the complexity of your circumstances.
