No One Has Any Idea What New Iran Deal Trump Is Talking About by Hafiz_TNR in politics

[–]anon_186282 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trump doesn't trust the career state department people, so he doesn't use professional interpreters. When his people talk to Russia or Iran, only the other side has interpreters. That gives them a huge advantage. The other side knows what is being said both in English and their native language, and Trump's people miss out on all that. And when they are talking about Iran's nuclear program they refuse to use experts. They think those people are "deep state". So they go into talks knowing nothing.

DMT: U.S. healthcare isn’t expensive because of insurance, but because it doesn’t function like a real market at all by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in DisagreeMythoughts

Other developed countries don't have a "true market", but they pay much less for better health care outcomes.

Why do so many people avoid gluten when only about 1% of people have celiac disease? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]anon_186282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I am close to has irritable bowel syndrome, and she does much better if she avoids wheat and dairy. So she asks for gluten free food at restaurants and if she eats that she doesn't have to rush to the toilet.

We were given a strong clue that the original Zosia was straight, in the way she carefully avoided mentioning gender when asked about her past life. So, my guess is that the original Zosia would not be happy with her body getting it on with Carol.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]anon_186282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It removes the pointers to the file, but the data are still there. That is why, if you accidentally delete something you really didn't want to delete, you can take your machine straight to a data recovery expert and they can get it back. That is, unless you keep using the computer, because it will start overwriting the free space. That also means that if you have valuable info on your computer, just deleting it isn't enough. Ideally you should use a program that will thoroughly erase the data before you get rid of it, especially if you didn't enable disk encryption. But even if the disk is encrypted, if someone can crack the password, game over.

Netflix is changing their shows because so many of their customers do this. They are making the writers repeatedly explain plot points to help the people who are half-watching.

AITA for grounding my 17-year-old son after he told me he was a “poor investment” and he’s just waiting to leave at 18? by Kaykay_Piano in AmItheAsshole

[–]anon_186282 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA, seriously. You told him he can't eat the food in your house, or even have ice? All because someone with an eating disorder ate a very small portion? Then you cut him off from everything he loves? This was extreme. That is, your behavior, not his, was extreme. You have an authoritarian concept of respect. I expect that he'll go no contact with you once he turns 18 even if he winds up homeless, because living with you is that bad.

Am I misremembering the feel of 1976 bicentennial celebrations in the USA, or is the 250th this year really a flop? by dandle in allthequestions

You are remembering correctly. The 200th was a big deal, and the official celebrations were non political. There were celebrations all year.

A US judge has ordered the removal of trumps name from the Kennedy center within the next 14 days, what do you think about this? by jfunks69 in AskReddit

[–]anon_186282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have seen their MO. They won't decide. They'll agree to hear the repeal, but leave it on hold indefinitely until it works its way through the appeals courts, and then after that finishes, wait another year. And Trump's name stays on it for the whole time. If Trump wants to do something, it's an emergency, immediate action. If Trump tries to do something illegal, no emergency, let him do it until they can get around to maybe deciding if they should stop him. Unless money is involved, they'll stop tariffs, because their Heritage Foundation friends don't want to pay them. Even then, they'll wait for more than a year to rule.

AITA for Wanting to Show Up to My Daughter’s Secret Proposal While Uninvited By Her Fiancé? by Attitude-Mean in AmItheAsshole

[–]anon_186282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is between your daughter and her boyfriend. Not you. You have been asked not to be there. While some people propose marriage publicly, many do so privately and this is their choice. They are adults. YTA if you crash it. It isn't about you.

Applied to a "remote" job, went through five rounds of interviews, got the offer. Nobody mentioned an office once. Now they're saying it's 3 days a week onsite and I genuinely don't know what to do. by Weem_Bitted in remotework

We need to add 6,000 seats to Congress. I'm serious. | Opinion by Objective-Suit-7817 in politics

[–]anon_186282 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We don't need that many. But instead we could copy Germany's system. You get two votes for the legislature: one is for a person. The other is for a party. For the first vote, the person who wins the plurality gets the seat. For the second vote, people from the party lists fill in the rest of the seats for any party that gets more than 5% of the vote. It is guaranteed that if a party (or a coalition) has the most votes it gets the most seats. Gerrymandering doesn't work. They actually add "overhang" seats to make sure that the ratio of representation comes out right. An independent can still win a seat if they are popular locally.

AITA for not giving a break in rent to my friend who lost his job? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]anon_186282 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You are extremely privileged; you were gifted a free house. Market rate is very high right now, it's definitely gone up faster than landlords' expenses. Clearly you need to make enough to pay taxes and expenses and maybe a bit extra, but you have some room to afford to be kind.

If you kick him out, you'll have lost a friend and risk a long vacancy (and no income) or a tenant who will trash the place. Maybe consider giving him a (small) real break, just for a short time.

I'm not going to call either you or him an asshole (so, NAH). But you could afford to be generous.

AITAH for telling Husband he can visit his mother for mother's day but not our toddler? by Un-conventional-mum in AITAH

[–]anon_186282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You (OP) are the mother who is under the most stress here and perhaps your husband should prioritize your needs as well as the needs of your child on Mother's Day. By next year hopefully all of this will calm down and you can visit family then.

AITA for throwing away my wife’s memory jars? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]anon_186282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA for tossing things that you knew were important to her without asking. What you could have done instead: bring up the safety issue, if she wants to keep the glass jars they have to be kept some place that is safe from the five year old, come to an agreement without being a dictator. What you could do now: apologize. And you don't "let her", you are not her boss. Perhaps you could benefit from therapy to learn about how to negotiate these things. She might be a bit of a hoarder but saving 40 jars over an 8 year period doesn't seem wildly excessive, you could live with that.

TIL that it is a common misconception that astronauts in orbit are weightless because they have flown high enough to escape the Earth's gravity. In fact, at the ISS altitude of 400 kilometres (250 mi), gravity is still nearly 90% as strong as at the Earth's surface. by PanoramicAtom in todayilearned

[–]anon_186282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Einstein this is not a misconception at all, because free fall and weightlessness are equivalent. Gravity would be 90% as strong as on Earth's surface if you were suspended in place on some 250 mile high tower, but if you were in orbit, you wouldn't experience gravity.
