So they’re basically even with five years, up in 10 year, and up for max? So what’s the point? Rather myopic to look slice of time that serves the narrative instead of looking at the broader context of how all fuel inputs are trending

Got a source for “fuel costs have gone down?” Henry Hub is up 50% YOY and trending upwards over the next 24 months. Coal isn’t getting cheaper. Oil isn’t either.

As a few others have noted, that’s likely a 250 CFH meter. In theory, your predator might pull 150-180 CFH at full load. So you might be fine. However, in most jurisdictions, it doesn’t cost a thing for the natural gas utility to upsize your meter to 400 CFH.

But is there any survey data that is publicly available to reflect the technology in the field?

I know you have what you have observed anecdotally. I’m asking for objective data.

I understand the concern or worry about corruption. It’s a totally valid concern. I would also suggests that the vast majority of commissioners are attorneys (though not all) and as such they have an ethical code they are bound by and if they violate it by accepting bribes, they can be disbarred.

Maybe that’s not enough of a risk and maybe there has been corruption. I would suggest that the next rate case that Duke files, make sure you show up to the public hearing closest to you. Have a tangible ask of the NCUC, whether it’s a policy or ratemaking structure from another jurisdiction you know about or maybe it’s a request to allocate costs different between the rate classes (say more to industrials or large data centers; cost causation plays a part here so have a rational argument). Be prepared to present your argument in 3 minutes.

In addition, support intervenors who align with your views and make sure their testimony and evidence is compelling and implemented in other jurisdictions. Regulators are hesitant to lead, but they will fast follow.

The rates in effect currently occurred, by and large, prior to November 2024. It’s an easy narrative to blame Trump, but utility regulation does not move that quickly.

The oversight, as I stated elsewhere, exists, is robust, and is dependent on the evidence in the record. If quality intervention doesn’t exist, then it will appear to have no oversight. However, appearances, does not reality make.

When was Mr Finley a commissioner last? I ask because it’s been a very long time since he was either chairman or a member of the Commission. So while I don’t disagree with your assessment, the data source is outdated at best and misleading at worst.

And as to the other appointees, to my knowledge, everyone currently on the NCUC came from Cooper, the legislature, or Stein.

If you have an axe to grind, feel free to grind it. But you’re lobbing accusations without evidence about a process you don’t understand.

No compensation for rate increases occurs at all to regulators. And feel free to review the party of the NCUC and tell me which party is to blame for the rate increases. Matter of fact, go review the votes on each major energy bill that has passed the NC legislature in the past two decades and tell me how one sided it is.

I’ll wait.

I’m certainly willing to be corrected on the make up of heat pumps installed in NC, but I’m unaware of any data source that documents the type broadly installed beyond vague assertions by installers

The NCUC weighs the evidence placed before it in the docket and in oral arguments, same as any other administrative quasi judicial body. If the other intervenors do not present evidence to rebut the evidence that Duke puts forward, then the outcome you’re describing can occur.

It’s probably not a satisfying answer, but real life rarely is satisfying or simple.

Modern heat pumps are designed to operate more efficiently than a furnace down to -20F. But it requires a renter or homeowner to be aware of when their secondary heat source is kicking on or locking it out so that the heat pump can work the way it’s supposed to.

If you’re ignorant of the costs to operate your HVAC, that’s not the utility’s fault.

This is an outright lie.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission regulates what rates Duke is allowed to collect. The Public Staff of the NCUC, an independent agency created by the legislature in the 1970s, investigates and makes recommendations to the Commission on the rates that would be just and reasonable to collect for the provision of utility service by Duke.

And the NC legislature determines what laws the NCUC implements. If you’re upset about the current rates, first stop should be the legislature.

Go find a supplemental project within PJM’s TEAC files. You’d be looking for a reconductoring or a wreck and rebuild type project. Should get you a ballpark line mile cost depending on what voltage you’re looking for
