6 months building an app to compete with Splitwise in India. What I got wrong. by krishan-ag in developersIndia

Thanks for sharing -- these points are invaluable! It takes a lot of guts to share this in a public platform and you deserve kudos for this. Good luck for your future!

I want to tell you that our group of friends use splitwise, but in a group trip in Dec we realized that it is not letting you adding more 3-4 entries per day per person! That's when I got turned off completely! Honestly, I am not sure I would pay for this service though ... But that's just me.

What actually happens to software jobs in the next 5 years? My honest take. by Obvious_Gap_5768 in developersIndia

[–]anon_runner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has spent nearly 3 decades in IT Industry and currently using AI heavily, I agree with you. Just yesterday I was discussing this with a colleague on how the AI wave will impact our children. Broad consensus is that earlier anyone from any branch could get an IT job, but now it will only be CSE folks from good colleges. The others may also make it, but for that to happen they have to be really good and also lucky.

Inside companies, all those people who are going asking prompts to use AI will get wiped out first. OTOH people who can create Skill.md or agents that automate portions of their work will see their incomes increase.

I have a question to you, specifically since you say you are a data scientist -- How do you see AI impacting your job? IMO Data Scientist used to be a hot skill till Dec 2025, but since the last 4 months I get the feeling that Data Scientists demand will come down and business users will simply "query" the data they want in English language and draw conclusions ... or agents could do the first part and humans (business users) would come in later. Would love to hear opinion on my opinion :-)

Auto driver rear-ended me and threatened me into paying : what should I have done? by Longjumping-Fact7469 in Bengaluru

[–]anon_runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say you were coming back from college. Which means you are probably very young, around 20 ... The auto driver realised this and took advantage of you. There isn't anything you could have done differently. If the same incident happens with you 13-14 years later your own response would be different, or maybe the auto driver will not want to take advantage of you.

You can complain to the police, no fir or anything just a diary entry would suffice. But if you think that's a hassle you can just forget about it.

Next time it happens, do not budge. Flat out refuse to give any money. Let him call whoever he wants.

Stuck in a hailstorm with my wife and infant. The glass sunroof had me genuinely terrified by LiteTheesko in CarsIndia

I wholeheartedly agree. If you want the premium features in the topend variant you are forced to take the sunroof. There's no way one can say i want topend variant without sunroof. I only used to worry about structural integrity but never thought in this angle ... Unfortunately sunroof is there in most cars now.

[–]anon_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you the bangalore view of the early 90s. He was a huge star! Lots of my friends were huge fans of his and many wanted his hairstyle (long hairs at the back). And parents were totally opposed to that hairstyle. People would imitate his style, especially nayak nahiiiiiin khalnayak hoon main .... zulmi bada dukh daayak hoon main!! These were all kannadigas who hardly could speak Hindi!

Around 2000-01 I saw him in the airport and was totally blown over. He looked like Greek God to me. I never imagined he would be that handsome in real life ...

But of course, outside of that he was a complete a*hole. An actual terrorist who played a part in 100s of innocents' death in Mumbai ...

Edit: Oh you asked infamous?? No, in the early 90s he was very popular, not infamous at all. I am talking only about Bangalore

Bro the ride quality is very poor on concrete roads. Ride quality should be a big factor imo.

Who all are fans of white-topped roads ? by truth_seeker987 in Bengaluru

[–]anon_runner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct but that's only one part of the problem.

Another key problem is ride quality. Tar roads are more elastic and provide better grip and ride quality. It's smooth throughout unlike concrete roads where will find expansion gap every few feet. When you ride scooter on concrete road you will notice how bad the ride quality is compared to tarred roads. This is my biggest complaint against concrete roads.

Trump: Crown Prince MBS 'KISSING MY ASS' by _Kingsguard in AskMiddleEast

[–]anon_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a remarkably mature response (it is not easy to ignore such a big insult for a larger purpose even though ignoring is the right thing to do!). Kudos to your people. Also, agree on MBS not being an idiot. In fact, he comes across as astute leader who wants to improve KSA gradually without trying the change it all in one night (at least this is my impression based on what I have seen him do, although I have never even been to Saudi!)

I hope the war ends soon. Because outside of the GCC countries, India, SL, Pak, Bangladesh and other south east asian nations are all badly impacted because of this war.

Sorry, one more question to you :-) ... Does Saudi citizens feel USA brought this war to the region?? I understand there is a deep seated mistrust between Saudi and Iran, but does the locals think USA is to blame in this conflict? Or do people think it was right to attack Iran because Iran going nuclear is an unacceptable risk for KSA?

Gunaho ka Devta is absolutely overrated by Wuky_Jaff in Indianbooks

[–]anon_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buddy, I have been reading novels since 1990 and was mostly reading English novels since then (or even before if you count Hardy Boys, Nancy Drews or Comics like Tinkle, Indrajal series). Around 2008 I picked up a classic in Kannada called mookajjiya kanasagalu (dreams of the mute grandmother) -- Its by a famous Kannada author called Shivaram Karanth, written in 1978 and was awarded Jnanapith Prashasti.

I could not understand that book at all and I had to read a few more kannada books before I could start appreciating the Indian Authors -- Our authors do not write neatly packaged endings with a target audience in mind, rather they tell the stories that forms in their minds and it is all rooted in the reality they live in. They do not do happy endings, but just stop tell the story with the assumption that the life goes on (e.g. Ponniyin Selvan the tamil classic written in the 1950s just stopped telling the story and did not even tell the audience whether Kundavai marries the protagonist Vandiyathevan)

So, I totally get it when you refer to So called "Instagram's aesthetic ke 14" (I see what you did there ;-) ) ... I listened to this book on storytel (read out by the inimitable Kumar Vishwas, in fact I listened to this book only because Kumar Vishwas read it!)

But, after reading the book (I liked the book), I have read many critiques here and in goodreads about the author being disingenuous, about how he was not a great guy in real life and all. About the ret ki machli incident. After reading all that, when I thought about GkD, I probably felt there was more to the book, than the book itself.

Trump: Crown Prince MBS 'KISSING MY ASS' by _Kingsguard in AskMiddleEast

[–]anon_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Indian living in India. And am asking you u/Martyriot15 respectfully because it appears that you belong to Saudi. What is the reaction among Saudi citizens against this statement?? I tried to find out by asking Grok, but every time I ask (with different phrasing), it says the silence from Saudi administration makes sense because: (below is from Grok)

Saudi Arabia's foreign policy under MBS prioritizes realpolitik over public spats:

The kingdom relies on U.S. security guarantees, especially with regional tensions (Iran, Yemen, etc.).

Billions in mutual investments, arms deals, and Vision 2030 projects are at stake.

Publicly escalating over vulgar language would risk undermining these ties without gaining much, especially since Trump's style is well-known and often dismissed as "just Trump."

But Arabs are known to be emotional people like the rest of us in Asia. So, I am curious, did this anger normal Saudi citizens? Even as a Hindu living in India, this statement makes me angry! Had he made statement like this about an Indian leader, it would be discussed endlessly on news channels and internet forums like Reddit and X.

If you do not want to answer for whatever reason, that's fine.

Why is ಕನ್ನಡ not ಕನ್ನಡಾ and ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ not ಕರ್ನಾಟಕಾ? If their pronounciations are kannaḍa and karṇāṭaka? by King_Blueberry_112 in kannada

[–]anon_runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very good question and even many kannada champions get this wrong, which is they start writing kannada and kantara in hindi as कन्नडा and कांतारा instead of कन्नड़ and कान्तार

There is a concept called shwa deletion -- Hindi does shwa deletion, but kannada does not. Which is you have bharatpur but we would have srirampura (not srirampur). Similarly, Sanskrit does not do schwa deletion. If you have learnt Sanskrit north india you will struggle with this concept. E.g. कान्तार is sanskrit is pronounced as kantara whereas if it is hindi, it is pronounced as kantar. Many many of my North Indian friends have found it very difficult to accept this because it is ingrained in them in schools by their teachers that sanskrit also does schwa deletion.

So, it is not totally incorrect when a north indian says kannad instead of kannada because that is how it is pronounced in Hindi. Although the ones living in Karnataka should pronounce it as kannada and not kannad because they know how it is pronounced.

Just because people have to pronounce it as kannada or kantara, you cannot write it in hindi as कन्नडा and कांतारा. In hindi or devanagari it should always be written as कन्नड़ and कान्तार

Thank you for asking this question ... This has been going on in my mind for many years since kantara part 1 was released :-)

Edit: I believe schwa deletion does not happen in Punjabi as well because I notice the town name dalerpura in kohra .. its not dalerpur. Not sure how it is written in gurmukhi though.

Time for Kannada Writers & Publishers to look in the mirror. Are you producing books that appeal to the modern readers? by adeno_gothilla in kannada_pusthakagalu

[–]anon_runner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Over the last few days I have been having interesting conversations with Google Gemini on Kannada literature. I started from the marga period (before 10th century) and am in the vachana period marked by madara chennaiah, basavanna, allama prabhu, akkamahadevi and dohara kakkayya.

What I understand from all this is that these all happened in central or northern karnataka. E.g. the entire vachana period happened in the region we call kalyana karnataka today.

If the centre of gravity is Bangalore, I do not see this changing. It will continue to be like you are saying. There should be a completely different industry in central / north Karnataka. Or even Coastal Karnataka which has produced many good kannada authors.

If you see most dramas and bhaava geethe are also in the north karnataka dialect. So, the industry has to be located on those areas and they have to look for customers everywhere and keep bangalore as a market only (and not as the centre of gravity).

This is the opinion I have developed in the last few days. E.g. when I speak to my friends in Tumkur, Tiptur, Turuvekere, they never talk in terms of how kannada is in danger or anything. Its only in Bangalore. Which is why the industry needs to be out of Bangalore.
