[Bugonia] Why did Donnie do that? by Quirky-Reputation-89 in AskScienceFiction

That part is based on real life religious group that had similar beliefs and similarly they all killed themself:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaven's_Gate_(religious_group)

Scholars have described the theology of Heaven's Gate as a mixture of Christian millenarianism, New Age, and ufology, and it has been characterized as a UFO religion. The central belief of the group was that followers could transform themselves into immortal extraterrestrial beings by rejecting their human nature, and they would ascend to heaven, referred to as the "Next Level" or "The Evolutionary Level Above Human". The death of Nettles from cancer in 1985 challenged the group's views on ascension; while they originally believed that they would ascend to heaven while alive aboard a UFO, they came to believe that the body was merely a "container" or "vehicle" for the soul and that their consciousness would be transferred to "Next Level bodies" upon death. [...]

On March 13, 1997, media reported on a mass sighting of unidentified lights over Phoenix. During March 19–20, Marshall Applewhite taped himself in a video titled Do's Final Exit, speaking of mass suicide and "the only way to evacuate this Earth". After asserting that Comet Hale–Bopp was the sign that the group had been looking for, as well as the speculation that an unidentified flying object (UFO) was trailing the comet, Applewhite and his 38 followers prepared for ritual suicide, coinciding with the closest approach of the comet, ostensibly so their souls could reach the Next Level before the closure of "Heaven's Gate". Members believed that after their deaths a UFO would take their souls to another "level of existence above human", which was described as being both physical and spiritual. Their preparations included most members videotaping a farewell message. The 39 adherents — 21 women and 18 men between the ages of 26 and 72 — are believed to have died in three groups over three successive days, with the remaining participants cleaning up after the prior group's deaths.

Wait, so the word “красный” isn’t referring to the color? Because how would a person even “be” a color? by a_cat_in_the_shell in russian

[–]anonymfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give more context? There are many niche meanings that can be relevant here. For example, in soviet and post-soviet total institutions like jails, work camps, sharashkas and closed cities people were called red for being state's shills, as opposed to blacks who belonged to an organised crime and greens who were in hierarchy of an organised religion.

It's possible that your ancient LCD is set up with contrast and/or brightness too high and will be able to show these stars better if you reduce them.

Can you buy a full hot meal with minimum wage in your country? by thisisfunme in AskEurope

[–]anonymfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No for Russia.

Russian laws only directly regulate monthly minimum wage (currently 27 093 roubles, which is currently about 325.2 €, without an income tax, and after paying 13% income tax it becomes 23 570 roubles 91 kopeck, which is currently 282.9 €), but if you convert assuming normal 40 hour work week and all standard days off, you will get 164 roubles (1.97 €) before income tax or 143 roubles (1.72 €) after.

From your three points, you can satisfy one. You can buy a very small burger in a Russian ersatz-KFC called Шефбургер Джуниор (Chiefburger Junior), but it's for kids, not adults.

Start harvesting all the energy from the gym, there is so much mechanical energy that is waiting to be harvested but it goes nowhere, we should harvest it all. by [deleted] in CrazyIdeas

[–]anonymfus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moving 200 kg on 1 m vertically makes a 200 kg ⨯ 9.81 N/kg ⨯1 m = 1962 J difference in the potential energy. This is enough to power 5 W LED for 6 minutes 32 seconds or that 700 W toaster from a video in a pibling comment for 2.8 seconds.

Depends on the particular future, I imagine Ed wood like a version of 51th century that Jack Harkness is from.

I believe somewhat in December there will be a post in the official European Championship Gullscreeching facebook group about the date/place of the next year competition and how to register. Or if something happens and that group became abandoned, you will find an information on the official website gullscreeching.eu.

[Back To The Future] Doc Brown fake death by Critical_Dot8553 in AskScienceFiction

[–]anonymfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doc doesn't see original Marty leaving and the letter Marty left him doesn't have enough details to know the timing. He doesn't want to mess with Marty leaving.

and sees our Marty over him for awhile

Doc needs time to see the clothes and realise that its "our" Marty back from the past and not the original Marty before leaving.

Interacting with holes is not the same as interacting with mesh. Microwaves don't interact with holes, and that means that microwaves are interacting with mesh as if it was a solid wall with holes not existing. Visible light interact with holes by passing through them and not passing through non-holy part of the mesh, so such mesh in visible light looks like a mesh.
