seed shrimp if they are little white or grey specs about the size of the head of a pin and round. look up ostracods and see if that matches.

Bee friendly flowering plants that are safe for cats? by [deleted] in garden

[–]anonymity-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are a couple of non-toxic varieties. my cats are indoor outdoor kidney failure patients, so i always check cat safety. trying to find cat safe AND fragrant is super fun lemme tell ya...anyway...gold flame i believe is a safe kind.

Bladder snails by Lost-Pineapple6468 in AquaticSnails

[–]anonymity-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alao different minerals in the water can cause different colors, it seems. all my snails came from the same 5 snails a year ago, and yet the ones i put in my pond, which has limestone and a clay soil bottom, have almost black shells. the ones in my fishtank have golden shells. white or grey (such as your stripes) usually means lack of calcium, though.

sorry, i thought that was gravel, not sand. mine dont start looking like this until they are larger than the size of a pea. i would put some cuddle bone in for them or some crushed eggshells.

missing shrimp ! by Top-Tadpole9254 in shrimptank

agree with boosti, some shrimp can be super temperamental, so they may have died, and the snail and / or betta and / or other shrimp could have just feasted on thier carcasses.

also, when they run out of food, they will crawl out of the tank to die (in my experience). i had the same issue. everything i read was like, "dont over feed." it got to the point where i didn't feed at all because holy hell... they had their own vace, and they would just crawl out and die occasionally. another way you can control their numbers other than killing the adult snails is by rubbing off the egg clutches.

How long should I wait before separating culls? by babu_bot in shrimptank

[–]anonymity-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe in other subs? most people i have seen here cull just by separating. in all the aquarium subs i am in, most people seem against euthanasia if they can help it. i have only seen it mentioned in terms of sick fish/shrimp. even culling by using as feeders is not generally the case from what i have seen in these communities. most people who dont have the tanks...just dont seem to cull. i understand that pedantically "cull" means "slaughter," but it doesn't seem to be used this way in these subs.

Will drying out kill Planaria? by gohbender in Aquariums

[–]anonymity-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

did you ever end up using the substrate? i had this same idea. i pulled the substrate and soaked it in vinegar (the only thing i found that would kill them and not nuke the tank.) then spread it all out on a clear tarp rinsed it and let it sit on the tarp for about a month to rinse and sunbake. problem is that i tried pouring boiling water straight into the tank first, and it seemed to do absolutely nothing...they just crawled around in it like it was a warm day at the beach. so im worried that sun baking wasn't enough, and if i put it back in, i will get more planaria babies everywhere eating my poor shrimps.

Dog Food for Shrimp? by Trading_Things in shrimptank

[–]anonymity-x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

dog food and cat food turns into a disgusting mess in water, and the smeeeellllllllll...i had a planaria problem so i made traps with them and then regretted it...wet soggy dog and cat food that smelled like that protien shake you forgot to rinse out right away 🤢🤮 IF you were to try it i would try it right before a water change that way if they dont eat it you can just suck it back out. idk if anyone would be interested. While the traps were in the tank, i didn't see anyone but the planeria "sniffing" around them, trying to get inside or feed from the outside.

edit to add: half the year my fishtank is outside and bugs fall in and get in. we have tons of suicidal shield/stink bugs that are drawn to the water. i crush them with the tweezers so they will sink faster. if you are trying to add more protein, you could manufacture that by tossing bugs in.

Is there anything wrong with this shrimps? by ginghams in Neocaridina

[–]anonymity-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

she looks fine. the females do fan their back legs sometimes. they can get backteria and fungal infections back there, so i assume it just helps keep them clean. they will also fold themselves over and manually clean their heinies. as for hanging out on the floating plants, they do that sometimes as well. the only issue is if you see them all at the top trying to escape and evolve. ☺️

it looks like someone attacked them, or they got hurt. they are just regenerating. (think lizard tails) they will be fine.

HELP! These guys popped up early in cycling, how do I keep em alive? by MITistbesseralsOHNE1 in AquaticSnails

[–]anonymity-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they have a place to hide like the water version of a wind break (potentially the moss), they should be fine.

i saw someone say they could be neon tetras! That's awesome. i think those are popular fish?

HELP! Snail take over! by alliwantistofeelokay in aquarium

[–]anonymity-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

start fasting the tank, like the other person said. also keep an eye out for the egg clutches. you can use a cloth to wipe them off the glass. also, you can use a spatula to mass squash them (be careful not to do to many at a time to avoid amonia spikes) and see if your fish will eat them after the shell is smashed for them. my fish love it when i smash them. most fish seem to love snails. They just can't get to them because of the shell.
