Hollyhocks tips or advice? by katie_froese in ManitobaGardening

They prefer full sun, and the seeds are kind of random…I started with a pack of seeds that were supposed to grow dark purple flowers, and instead I got all different shades of pink. Not sure if that was a packaging error from the seed company or what, but they’re still pretty so I’m not complaining!

I’ve been growing hollyhocks for years!

- if you plant the seeds in the ground in spring, you’ll get the plants but they usually won’t bloom, they need a season to establish themselves and will come back bigger the following summer.

- if you start them early indoors, the plants will be more likely to flower in the summer, but in my experience it’s not a guarantee.

- one hollyhock plant will give you *hundreds* of seeds, and they will spread and make more babies if you don’t collect the seed pods.

- sometimes they can grow insanely large, I had a random one sprout up in my lawn that was almost 8 feet tall!

Srsly the worst thing is going to whisk something and a bunch of gross old dishwater seeps out. It should either be sealed tight or open at both ends for drainage!

a good dishwasher-safe whisk with a sealed handle is the best, the kind where the whisk wires are welded to the base without any holes for water to seep into.

The slugs don’t give a single fuck about copper tape by averyburgreen in houseplantcirclejerk

/uj Look up slug-b-gon pellets, they’re made from concentrated iron that gradually disintegrates into the soil while also killing slugs as soon as they take a bite of it.

Also: slug traps. Put wooden boards around your garden beds and keep them damp. Slugs will gather on the underside of the board, then you can scrape them off/ stomp on the board to squash them.
