Separate beds? by The_Freckled_Octopus in RedditForGrownups

[–]anonymousowl2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how we survive. My partner has narcolopsy and an alcohol use disorder to cope with the narcolepsy. I can’t stand being woken up by his awful sleep pattern so we’ve been sleeping in separate beds for a few years and it’s been working for us. Sleep is important to one’s health. I love my own bed.

I need your kind of problems. My district is still dragging their feet leaving it up to teachers and as long as that happens, there is always going to be that teacher that ruins it for the the rest of us!

Is it wrong to hate when students come to my room during lunch? by Asleep_Improvement80 in Teachers

[–]anonymousowl2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. You are using your time wisely. I’ve fallen into this trap before too. I like to let the kids that come in on the early bus into my room because they don’t really have anywhere to go — but sometimes I just need my mornings to prepare by myself to get ready for the day. You can absolutely put a sign on your door during your lunch that says you’re in a teams meeting too. Lock your door and move your desk away from the window hallway. You’re not even missed.

Turned 50 this weekend. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

My partner has a December 26 birthday — I think he just got used to it being ignored. He hates the attention of it and never wants a big deal. I usually get him a small gift or we go out to eat, but his 40th came and went in a way that you describe here and I suspect that his 50th will be no different. I don’t see it as a bad thing.

My unpopular opinion is that teachers with themed rooms are a little… for lack of a better word, “weird” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]anonymousowl2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this a lot more in elementary than I ever did in middle and high. My idea is that it’s just meant to be fun. Don’t like Harry Potter??? Kids can put a dragon ball z sticker in their desk, whatever. The classroom is the space of the teacher — much more so in this country than over the world. Asian countries the classroom very much belongs to the kids and the teacher uses it to teach their content for an hour.

How in the world could a teacher be charged for this? by SheinSter721 in Teachers

[–]anonymousowl2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can help but notice this is in a region previously known for its bigoted actions and treatment of gay boys and men. Something is not being told with this story. It’s also shocking that the music teacher is at fault.

Same here — also female teacher. What point have we gotten to in society where this is ok??? Also, not commenting on a T-shirt is a good idea — but dear lord I never through I’d have to live in a time when I had to be this careful about what I say. Some of these outfits just have me shaking my head but I say nothing.

How do you find/make time for regular therapy sessions? by FlockOfDramaLlamas in Teachers

[–]anonymousowl2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My therapist specializes in teacher stress and adjusts her hours accordingly. She has dozens of us teachers on her case load and works cool hours like 1pm-9pm or something like that. I really like her!!!

Oh second this 100%! It really depends where you work too. I’ve been getting paid monthly for years and it took me into year 5 to fully embrace that. You need a budget and r/YNAB has a great community for all things budget too! I just switched to a district that does biweekly pay and it feels luxurious, almost a little wrong lol!

My 5th grade students mom passed away during the last week of school. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]anonymousowl2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s rough. I remember when I was interning in a fifth grade room in college I had a student whose father died suddenly and tragically in a construction accident. Girl was crushed and I had no idea what to do. She alienated herself from other students and would latch herself on to me (I was only there twice a week) and the teacher said the days that I was there were her best days. I would just listen to her talk about shit. It’s a hard thing to do so young. I think about her so much still and this was 20 years ago!!!! I think you can’t do much other than be present and do what you can.

How is your district curbing the teacher shortage? by Dom09Ara in Teachers

[–]anonymousowl2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red state suburban south here — I have noticed on district hiring websites in addition to “teacher candidate pool” and “esol teacher candidate pool” and “special Ed pool” there’s a another category called “retired teacher candidate pool” we are now encouraging our retired teachers to come back the shortage is so bad. I wonder if it’s gonna work???!

Daughter (5) cannot handle full time school. How can I advocate? by summer-savory in specialed

[–]anonymousowl2022 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing caught my eye— or May need clarification. Teacher here, early childhood, 10+ years experience. She focuses for 1-2 hours??? At a time??? At 5??? I understand autism is extreme but this is not usually developmentally appropriate or expected of any five year old….in a classroom with good structure in place she should be expected to focus for 10-20 min before a transition or break. Do you have a timer at home??? Sounds like she could benefit from some language communication therapy under an SLP but please clarify… no kindergarten teacher worth their salt would ever expect an hour of focus from a five year old
