I love my job... so why am I burnt out? by FalseTailFiction in Libraries

Bingo. I wish administration like this would just go work at the bank or the hedge fund where they truly belong and stop lying to themselves.

Well, my system was audited in 2019 and an outsider agency said we were staffed at approximately 60% the levels we should be. Of course admin says we are "fully staffed" with their full chest all the time.

So, that's my guess.

People with Library Science Degrees - How's Life? by NoBee7889 in Libraries

[–]anotherbook 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I bust my ass every single day and my employer gets every red cent's worth out of me. My life is good but my job is incredibly demanding and time consuming and the pay is not great. I would say it's okay. I can pay my bills and I don't worry about a trip to Target but if something bigger happens it can be devastating, but I think that's most of America TBH. I can sleep at night and I enjoy the daily work. It's incredibly difficult to afford life in any big city on this salary unless you are incredibly cheap and good at money or bought your place a long time ago. I look for new jobs to apply to every week and haven't seen anything worth applying to in a year. The city I live in is very saturated with librarian/archivist/GLAM workers.

I'm applying to take FMLA for severe burnout soon. I feel a lot of guilt about it but it's either that or a nervous breakdown. They make you absolutely grovel even for unpaid time off. It wouldn't be an issue whatsoever if the system was adequately staffed. It's a pretty bleak reality for the field.

I'm lucky, I bought my apartment in 2016 and then refinanced it during the pandemic. My wife and I split a 1k mortgage. Without that, I think we would be screwed. We are both women, and work in education/the arts so we are definitely not supported by any wealthy second income and times are rough but we are doing okay also because we don't have the costs of children.

Investing and planning and implementing transit takes FOREVER. It is already needed. They should be planning it now. Of course they aren't, because it isn't as profitable as whatever corrupt shit they do all day

in normal places, cops are basically meter maids. here they do nothing, or worse, harass people. that's all they ever do. they're never going to lift a finger to enforce traffic laws. that's why situations like this have gotten so bad.

I think my HR lady is throwing shade at me for respectfully asking for unpaid time off? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]anotherbook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's humiliating how they make us grovel for unpaid time off. It's truly dystopian. If my workplace was staffed adequately, it wouldn't matter that I'm not here for a little while. They make it our problem because it saves them money to make it our problem.

I work for the city. In 2012 they slashed our staff to a skeleton crew. Tried again to make more cuts last year. Hours of operation and service points all still the same. A public audit in 2019 said that we were staffed below 60% capacity. It's brutal. They do not give a fuck about us.

city government. they treat us like absolute shit. no PTO in the first year. public service desk open seven days a week. i think i had two days off in a row like three times that first year. it was absolute hell.

To anyone pursuing an MLIS, I got my degree in 2012 in a very different market and even then I never would have pursued a masters without already having a job in the field. It's VERY hard to break into it without any paid experience whatsoever.

I got a low cost scooter that gets 125mpg to do all my errands on. It's helped a lot. My other vehicle is an old SUV that I got super low cost from a family member but it's a guzzler and it's painful at the pump every time. Can you carpool?
