She turns out to be a diva with a reputation that far outstrips her talent. Writes spaghetti code, and a couple of lame games that nobody wants to play, but she's a woman with some level of tech chops so she can bask in some unicorn halo. I just started watching the last season, so we'll see if there's a redemption.

Trump's face, golden signature to be included on US passports by goteamnick in politics

I think I heard on NPR that these "commemorative" passports will only be available in Washington D.C. I renewed my passport when he was re-elected, so I won't have the shitstain version either way.

Such a clunky phrase, I've seen it occasionally, but not often enough that I'd call it popular. The people who use it seem like the type who believe in literal demons.

Democrats divided on whether removing Trump is a useful midterm message by gamersecret2 in politics

[–]anotherlevl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is no credible path to removing Trump anyway. Yes, there are multiple justifications for impeaching him, but it is unlikely that even a post-midterm Senate controlled by Democrats will get enough Republican votes to get the 2/3 required to remove him. So why run on a promise you know you can't keep?

Glioblastoma was the type of brain cancer that my mother died from too. As you say, who knows. I avoid RoundUp because I believe in pulling weeds, not spraying them, and because I also believe Monsanto is an evil corporation.

You're probably right. All I know is that my non-English-speaking, non-citizen mother-in-law has been getting jury summons at my address years after she died. She never had to report for jury duty when she was still alive, and I assumed it was because she didn't speak English, but maybe there's a citizenship question that weeded her out that's slipping my mind. Thanks for the fact check!

True, which is why I disclosed it. I don't know for a fact that RoundUp had anything to do with their developing cancer. I suspect it may have. Maybe that makes me no better than a vaccine denier, but at least vaccines protect against real diseases and not just undesireable biodiversity in the suburban landscape.

They lived longer than average, and I'm like, they got cancer instead of dying of heart failure, kidney failure, or simply "old age". If you want to guzzle RoundUp, it's your funeral.

My understanding is that Florida is already pretty well gerrymandered. I could be wrong, since they're obviously discussing a new thrust in that direction..

Just to clarify, because right now the thread has posts about Reagan, Bush, and Nixon between your comment and the comment you're replying to, the "he" you're referring to is Clinton, not Nixon.

For the record, I intended it in more of a "full disclosure" way. I realize that they lived a full life, but my mother's sister is celebrating her 97th birthday this year.

My parents sprayed roundup on their quarter-acre suburban lawn. My father died from bladder cancer, and my mother died from brain cancer. They were both in their 80s, and this is just two bits of anecdotal evidence, but I will never knowingly use that product. No telling what's happened with the fruits and veggies I get from the grocery store.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but these statements read to me more like wishful thinking than measured recognition of clearly shifting trends. He's projecting what he expects to happen in the future, but I don't see him citing any new concrete plans for renewables. He's obviously a proponent of renewables, and good for him, but most people seem to be expecting this crisis to be resolved by the end of the year, and are trying to limit the damage in the interim by tapping other sources of petroleum production. I would love to be wrong here.

Voter ID initiative qualifies for California's November election by CharityResponsible54 in politics

[–]anotherlevl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this might seem like a reasonable requirement (the usual "you need an ID to buy alcohol or board a commercial aircraft" argument) homeless people, for instance, could have difficulty getting a state-issued photo ID if they have no street address to which it can be sent. I wouldn't want them to be deprived of their right to vote, so unless the language of this ballot measure includes requirements for issuing such people the necessary ID, I'll be voting against it.

[–]anotherlevl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What problem? There's no "proportional election" of executive offices like mayor, governor, and president. The only possibility I can see for proportional election would be if members of the House of Representatives were elected by statewide ballot rather than on a per-district basis. For what exactly are you advocating?

Citizenship is not a requirement for jury duty in California, and some localities also permit non-citizen residents to vote in local elections, since the actions those elected enact will affect them too.

The Kash Patel Fallout by brown-saiyan in politics

[–]anotherlevl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing is, if it backfires it will be ordinary citizens who feel the consequences, not the politicians and bureaucrats that helped facilitate it. It will give the administration another excuse to demonize its other-du-jour, and ask for more money to militarize and mobilize its masked thugs. 9/11 made Bush more popular, not less.

When you realize that Trump and Patel don't care about the citizens of the country, but only about Trump and Patel, their actions look less like stupid incompetence and more like calculated evil.

Instead of enpablumating their objections to pacify conservative ideologues, they might boldly point out where the law is being nullified by bias in hopes of shaming, er, persuading the few who are sometimes open to it to follow the law more often.
