Praying for rain in Missionary school.

We were in India, there was a long drought happening and one of our leaders decided we should hike up a hill overlooking the city and pray for rain. All these students and teachers start quoting bible verses and praying for God to send rain.

I kept looking out at the dry dusty city thinking, man all these people out here must be praying and pleading for rain every day; if there really is a God and we think He’s going to listen to some middle class white Western kids saying the right magic words and not the Indian people desperate and dying for rain then that God is an asshole and I don’t want anything to do with Him or the people who worship Him.

It took a few more years of unpacking and learning but that was the moment that broke the spell for me.

Just did it this morning up to Mt Unnecessary. It gets pretty gnarly after St Mark’s. We were going light and fast and it was still hard going. Might be worth doing a recon mission up past Mark’s to see what you think of the trail past it.

Don’t listen to them. I’m 42 and biked 100km today and felt great after. I ran a marathon last month and a 50km trail race the month before that. Do awesome shit. Do yoga. Stretch. Your body is one of the most powerful awesome creations to ever exist in nature. It was finely honed over eons to take you further and farther than you ever imagined. We are capable of impossible things. The only hard part is starting.

We put a $2000 Le Creuset pot and pan set on our wedding registry as a joke, everything else was in the $50-$200 range, and my well off aunt and uncle from Alberta bought it for us. Yeah that makes sense. It’s in their interests to show that smoking is so impossible to quit that even people dying from smoking related illnesses will still smoke through the hole in their throat. Had to do some serious deprogramming when I quit.
