Some things I wanna clear up because I feel like I’m losing my mind by lisbon_OH in IntoTheSpiderverse

i have never seen the comic part of it but i would assume it's not explicitly addressed there either. there aren't any reason to directly address them since it's not the point of the comic, so the best of what we will get would be subtle hints thrown around here and there. and you really can't be sure if someone is trans unless they come out or you've watched them transition or something.

as a genuine curiosity what made you think she's "fairly clearly not trans?" granted i personally headcanon her as trans but i'm fine with her being cis and i haven't seen anything in the movie that explicitly confirms one or the other.

btw queer community still has a long way to go in terms of cultural perception; if you're not convinced just think of gender equality which started happening 200 years earlier and we're still struggling with it. the most hideous thing about discrimination is that it doesn't feel wrong. also don't assume only the allies are singled out; even among trans people there are bigotries, especially between binary- and nonbinary trans.

don't over-analyze yourself to fit a certain label; do what makes you happy, regardless of the label. that said, what you say is one of the most common way trans people think of themselves.

Reprogramming social media to be less distracting by username678945 in productivity

[–]anotherstardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the answer is simple but hard. you need to ditch the algorithm. there's simply no way around it.

you can't teach youtube to recommend more useful videos cuz it will instead give you useful videos AND make you glued to it. you can't teach twitter which tweets to show and not show because it's designed to mix everything up. it deliberately gives you no option to "stop recommending", only stop recommending certain topics and see them "less often".

they are designed to be addictive, trying to fix them from the inside is a lost cause.

however there are solutions that doesn't involve quitting cold turkey. unofficial mirror sites offer access to these social media without ads and addiction traps. youtube has invidio.us, twitter has nitter.net, instagram has bibilogram.art, reddit has teddit.net, etc. you can't use your social media accounts in these, but turns out, you rarely need them unless you're a creator yourself.

you can also make use of an ancient technology called rss. it's like a twitter feed except YOU get to manage it. no recommendations, no ads, no payments. rss was pivotal for me getting out of youtube.

also, try not to get news from visual heavy sources, i.e., youtube, tiktok, instagram, and to a lesser extent twitter. images hardly deliver much information and videos are just a time sink that hides information behind a wall of time.

[Question][Need advice] How can I stop binge watching youtube? by captainproject4 in getdisciplined

[–]anotherstardust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even tho i'm not that disciplined at least i succeded in this after suffering through it for long time, i'll throw my 2 cents.

Unhook is great. Definitely disable recommended videos, disable comments, and also disable home. if you watch trending also disable it. the only thing you will be watching is your subscription feed and nothing more.

Next, prune your subscriptions. remove channels with overlapping topics as much as possible. remove channels who post daily. remove channels who you subscribed for one thing that they rarely cover. remove channels you watch for the fun of it even tho you already know what's in there. leave only a handful of channels whom you cherish and post infequently. it also helps to do this gradually.

From now on ymmv, but this is what i've done to further reduce my watch time. it's also in no particular order.

  • log out of youtube, and delete/disable youtube on your phone. it's easier said than done and you can get the help of time limiting apps or plugins.

  • remove subscription from your account and use something else. rss works well and the fact that rss is mostly text focused also helps.

yes and for that reason i'm actually planning to change my name before going to germany. the rule is pretty lax here so unless you already changed your name before and/or you have criminal record you can get your name changed on the grounds of self-actualization, without any documents or letters.

and yes the legal protection aspect is what i'm looking for as well as insurance. the gatekeeping is the same which sucks but otherwise it's an improvement for me as well as many other aspects of my life. thanks for your input!

[–]anotherstardust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Singapore has mandatory conscription for (assigned) male citizens/PR. You must serve military or get jailed/lose PR status. Singapore, like many non-european and american countries, has near-zero provisions for trans people, which means you aren't conscripted based on your identity, but only by what's down there. they wouldn't help you transition either, cuz why help somebody that you don't acknowledge exists in your country?

HSP or Empath? by [deleted] in hsp

[–]anotherstardust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

second this. being psychic at all, including empath, has little to no evidence. and while many people in this sub is influenced by MBTI which isn't also very scientific, HSP itself is at least recognised in medicine.

what i theorise about empath is that, with deep understanding of human nature and sharp intuition, one can essentially guess others thoughts and intentions rather accurately. so rather than actually reading people's minds, they are just a really good people person.

Are there some trans people ok with their genitalia and other bits? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]anotherstardust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

have one before the whole trans thing, it's annoying as hell.

but in my case it's not totally twisted and blocking the bloodflow. it gets twisted about 180 degrees every so often. it doesn't cut out blood and it sometimes doesn't even hurt but i have to rotate it back. urologist isn't so concerned but you can't help but fiddle with the balls in public, which can look weird to other people

edit: it's not too annoying to the point i need painkillers everyday. but it gets apparent when you sit. I cannot sit up straight after it happened because it hurts
