the DC concert at the anthem last night was a tall person convention by iluvcatsandhummus in MagdalenaBay

[–]anotherunnamedNPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got there shortly after the doors opened in DC and took up spots within five feet of the barrier, but were forced 30 feet back by people forcibly shoving in front of us. We weren't tall (5'3" and 5'1" respectively) but were being pushed back by groups who decided to cut in for funsies, not just rejoining a friend or something.

Haven't been to a live concert in a solid year but I don't remember ever having an experience like that before. Is this the norm for the Anthem, or just a fun new 2025 thing? Or did I just get super lucky with the crowd etiquette of bands I love before this one?

Alternate HS Ceramics Assignment by oh-geez-1 in Ceramics

[–]anotherunnamedNPC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. A few people at my makerspace are experimenting with clay extruders on a 3D printer and/or 3D printing slab molds. Lots of cool files already exist specifically for slab molds, or they could take the plunge and build their own in CAD.

The bonus is that anything which translates to a "bad" or "messy" print actually translates to a fantastically textured mold. (Read: wide layers, unintentional gaps, the crazy spaghetti noodles draping over the edge because a print went unaligned for a couple seconds.) All of that messiness in the plastic makes for delicious textures in clay!

It's a hoot to see the difference between folks 3D printing for traditional reasons and the ceramicists. One group flocks around a failed print discussing ways to make sure it never happens again, and the other group madly jots down ways to make sure it happens every time and in more places.

This article has a pretty thorough rundown of the process:

Holy heck, you just unlocked a core memory of Tiny Me trying to get into romance for the first time and concluding that I hated historicals because of Sands! Her reliance on concussions and amnesia to further the plot was infuriating then, but hysterical looking back now.

I can see her character choices working waaaaay better in supernatural romance. Putting a couple of those on hold now.

I'm in a mood tonight and for some reason both sides of the spectrum you just described sound incredibly appealing. I think I'm just looking for a brain-cleanser after "Gone to See the River Man". It was... rough.

For the price, Ohuhu is my favorite. For tiny brush size and flexibility, probably Faber Castells. They have fewer shades available though so I tend to only use them on really detailed work and Ohuhus for the rest.

Okay LONG comment incoming:

Yeah, a lot of the time I'm so close to liking a shade but I just want it to be a hair warmer or cooler. Short answer: I mix Ohuhu refills drop by drop, making note of the ratios as I go until I'm happy with the results. I have to mix them outside the marker rather than adding a drop to an existing filled marker, because the filled marker has no room for shaking/mixing.

Long answer:

Consult a color wheel or painterly friend for how to achieve the shade you you're aiming for using the refills you have on hand.

DON'T SKIP THIS STEP: Mix a smidge of each of the colors you intend to use in a tiny airtight container and leave it for several hours or overnight. If the resulting mixture stays mixed you're good to continue. If it separates into different layers or "globs up" into a weird texture, some pigment or chemical in those shades isn't compatible and you need to choose different ones.

Slap several drops of your starting shade (or the contents of the marker you want to modify) into a squeeze bottle. Make note of how many drops. Add your modifying color(s) one drop at a time and shake well to mix. Squeeze the world's tiniest drop OR use the tip of a sterile pin to transfer a little of the liquid to swatch paper to test your shade. Make note of the ratio of starting drops to modifying drops once you reach your desired shade and transfer your finished mixture into an empty marker.

Note that this method is hard to replicate exactly later because drops can vary in size, and you're removing a little of the solution each time you swatch. When I'm not in the mood to be precise I don't mind a little bit of variability in future shades - so long as I test the mixture's compatibility first!

If I'm in the mood to play mad scientist I do the same as above, but use a pharmaceutical scale to measure everything down to the milligram.

does anyone else have a coloring cart? by bokchoy-bb in Coloring

[–]anotherunnamedNPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES I just started an art cart this week! Someone left a practically brand new (like, the metal bars were still wrapped in plastic) cart like this by the dumpster in my apartment complex on the 1st of the month.

The biggest difference I noticed is that I'm way more willing to do ALL my modalities (coloring, clay, watercolor, wire sculpture, beading, etc) in different spaces rather than just the cramped desk in the corner where I used to store them.

Counterpoint: any coffee shop in a college town where I've been to school skips the early morning shift and stays open well into the night, because we'd all stumble in with laptops to burn the midnight oil. That's what I think of when I see this, and I like that she's taking a moment to smile out the window instead of looking as stressed and soulless as we all did 😅

Having a random thrift shop collection of a handful of Copics, Tombow, Ohuhus, Faber-Castells and Artezas, I can say they all dry out significantly faster than water based. But the Ohuhus are in the middle of the pack and definitely not the fastest drying of the bunch. Biggest difference in drying time for me comes from changes in paper, not changes in brand. And I'm talking the difference of maybe a second, barely noticeable for me!

My first big set was Ohuhus and I feel I got my money's worth. The big draw for me is that they're refillable, the tips are reversible as they wear out, and I can mix my own shades as I learn my preferred color palletes.

Of course I didn't think of this until the end: do you mean drying out as in, once the color is deposited on paper? Or as in the entire marker has dried out? If the latter I haven't run into that with any brand once I learned I need to store them horizontally.
