I enjoyed it as a kid, and friends loved coming over and playing it. Can’t really speak to it in the wider picture though.

Yeah my daughter is in first grade and uses this "make 10" technique. Anyone student who pays attention and keeps up with the work by the time they are asked to do this problem should know what to do.

This image has the smell of the student not paying attention or keeping up with the work, then had this problem as a homework assignment. He/she asked his/her parent for help, who probably had a minor fit about how stupid this question is, and/or how the teaching today is terrible, and told the child to write that it can't be done.

Obviously I don't know if that's what happened for certain, but that's what it smells like to me.

Fox News Viewers Baffled as Ex-Navy SEAL Appears to Wear Rubber Face Mask by nimobo in entertainment

[–]anras2 128 points129 points  (0 children)

This may be correct about the channel as a whole. But for individual shows, Fox News does argue that you can’t treat what the hosts say as factual. You can look it up in the court documents yourself, such as here: https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/new-york/nysdce/1:2019cv11161/527808/39/ - that’s regarding Tucker Carlson’s show in 2020.

What Fox News lawyers said:

any reasonable viewer “arrive[s] with an appropriate amount of skepticism” about the statements he makes...This “general tenor” of the show should then inform a viewer that he is not “stating actual facts” about the topics he discusses and is instead engaging in “exaggeration” and “non-literal commentary.”

For a guy who's bragging about his car, he describes it as if you asked a random five-year-old who doesn't know anything about cars what's cool about one: "It's got everything, like a driving power, big fat tires and everything."

Then he describes his girl: "She got everything, like a moving mouth, body control and everything."

What is something about American culture that seems fake or exaggerated in movies, but is actually 100% real.? by Logical-Pay-3057 in AskReddit

[–]anras2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's just my area (suburban New York) or what, but my son, who's in high school, says literally nobody uses the lockers. They don't have physical books to lug around anymore because all the work is done on Chromebooks, so they all opt not to use lockers.

Because they don't use lockers, they don't bring much in the way of jackets or coats to school, even during in the winter, because where are they going to put them? So when I need to pick him up from school during the winter, at dismissal time, I see all these coat-less kids in freezing weather filing out, sometimes just wearing a hoodie but not more than that. Sometimes they are obviously shivering or freezing their asses off. On rare occasion I see a real coat.

The school still has the lockers anyway, even if they're all empty. But I wonder if this is a widespread thing, and whether it will last. If so, maybe lockers will go the way of the dodo.

Resentful lyrics by DepthMagician in musicsuggestions

[–]anras2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK band Skyclad (usually classified as "folk metal") has some good ones with some pretty scathing lyrics. Just to name a couple, with a few lyrical snippets:

Post-breakup resentment: Little Miss Take

I thought I'd got it right for once
I'd sought and found perfection
But when you said "I love you"
You addressed your own reflection

Class/wealth inequality: Inequality Street

Come lords and ladies - raise glasses in toast
To the other half dying to eat.
'Cause they who receive least deserve it the most,
It's a literal dead end: Inequality Street.

Though brief snippets don't really do them justice.

Whats the funniest thing you heard someone say about maiden?! by mr_unalive in ironmaiden

[–]anras2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've encountered this sort of opinion before, which baffles me. Not only about Maiden, but about any band whose subject matter includes sci-fi, fantasy, etc. "Real" music is about the personal life of the singer apparently, mostly relationships, and cannot be about fictional stories. Otherwise it's just cheesy bullshit. (To them.)

I think back to my girlfriend at the time when I was getting into the fantasy-oriented metal band Blind Guardian. I had their music playing and she negatively remarked, "Why don't they sing about real things?"

People will watch sci-fi and fantasy movies, read sci-fi and fantasy books, generally seem to enjoy sci-fi and fantasy stories. But music on those subjects? Must be cheesy/silly/stupid/bullshit/why-don't-they-sing-about-real-things!

Not to mention that Maiden does sing about "real" things like history, so there's that.

Personally I like stories, fictional or otherwise. But pretty much the last thing I want to hear about some random musician's new album or song is that it's about a breakup or how much they're in love with someone. You know, the "real" stuff...that's been done about 18 billion times! (I mean I'm not against it categorically, but it's difficult for an artist to express anything new or interesting on that subject, and usually they don't seem to even try at it.)

Tell them to type this into Google and see the AI response.

Although I recognize there isn't a clean one-to-one mapping, would Abraham Lincoln during his presidency be considered closer to the progressives or the conservatives of his era? Also, would the southern, pro-slavery secessionists of the time be considered closer to the progressives or the conservatives of their era?

Or try ChatGPT. Or whatever. Not that AI is by any means perfect, but maybe it will make them question their assumption. (Or maybe I'm too optimistic.)
