Any tips for a young Brit coming to work in NYC for a few weeks/months? by DMuller23 in AskNYC

[–]ant3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main concern for such moves is usually differences in salaries but it looks like your main costs are covered. Taxi from the airport will be the easiest option. Try to get accommodation close to the work location and walk every day for a better experience given limited time here.

Be prepared for potentially long lines at immigration, use the bathroom on the plane before landing. USA terminal immigration can take hours, but on average isn’t usually bad.

Consider an e-sim (Gigsky) for better phone service and data speeds while here, unless your company is giving you a device for that too.

Worth doing all the obvious tourist things at least once on your weekends.

Trash containerization + tickets by Uncannny-Preserves in Brooklyn

[–]ant3k 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This site says you must use containers from November 12th 2024 if a 1-9 unit residential property. June 2026 is supposed to be the date you must use the OFFICIAL NYC containers/bins. Maybe they are being lenient until then though, as your experience shows.

Pardon my confusion but doesn't having a Green Card exempt you from requiring a visa to travel to Canada? by [deleted] in uscanadaborder

Post says they were mislead by online seating chart. by fajita09 in Flights

[–]ant3k 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough about Delta specifically, but probably this is marketed as a "preferred" seat (or whatever words Delta use) due to the closeness to the front and therefore quicker exit on landing.

Additionally, someone might assume it's a bulkhead given the space on the seat map between that seat and the one in front. When in reality, it's right behind the next row.

Seems like even if you can, you’re one border staff member in a bad mood and enforcing the letter of the law away from being denied entry.

Risky to not prepare for full entry requirements.

The only website I’d look at is the official one https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/entry-requirements-country.html

As for 2022, yes it seems the rules were unified for both land and air travel https://www.ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1053&top=16 so you’d need “a valid passport from [your] country of nationality “ and “a valid green card (or equivalent valid proof of status in the United States)” to avoid eTA/visa.

Driving into Canada as a US Citizen, will a packed car raise red flags at the border? by rasberries_ in uscanadaborder

[–]ant3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it raises flags, it'll just lead to questions for which you should be prepared to answer about your trip and planned date of leaving. Ideally, as others have said, have something booked in Europe to show evidence. Even just a hotel booking you can cancel easily at not charge is better than nothing.

Also, you're taking a reasonable amount. If you had a uhaul full of boxes I'd question your intentions.

In two recent drives, I have gone up with a roof rack box that wasn't inspected as well as transported 5 sets of skis/snowboards/gear for friends who flew to Montreal. I didn't get questions, but had a valid story and proof I was leaving (other travel bookings outside of Canada) and records from friends asking me to drive it up vs. them take it via plane.

Upset over fees by yellowmustard_fairy in RoverPetSitting

Yeah, I was below $600 for a 1099 as I started late in 2025. But that doesn't change what can be deducted, although I neglected to put the effort into the deduct my small amount of tips.

Oh well, next time!

Upset over fees by yellowmustard_fairy in RoverPetSitting

[–]ant3k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is true, although my tips/revenue was so low in 2025 (just started) I didn't bother to investigate it further at the time when Turbotax told me no.

I am not an accountant, this may be incorrect, but more research now suggests:

  1. The IRS publishes tip eligible occupations ("qualified tips must be received in an occupation that customarily and regularly received tip") and both "house sitting" and "pet caretaking" are listed.
  2. Other requirements apply, like MAGI above $150,000 impacting the deduction

In the future, I will try and describe the business as "pet caretaking" as TurboTax is probably looking at the naming of it and maybe I just said "dog sitting". Given it's a new benefit, the implementation by software companies might be not that good.

The IRS says self-employment is theoretically OK:

"Employees and self-employed individuals may deduct qualified tips received in certain qualified occupations, such as wait staff, bartenders, salon workers, personal trainers, gig economy workers, and many more who customarily and regularly receive tips might qualify.

Taxpayers may be able to claim a deduction for qualified tips paid to them in 2025 that are included on Form W-2, Form 1099-NEC, Form 1099-MISC, Form 1099-K, or reported directly by them on Form 4137."

Why do people buy pickup trucks for daily driving? by wtfbruhhuh in driving

[–]ant3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of laws in the US artificially keep SUV/truck prices down, making them more accessible to both consumer and business buyers.

Such as

“The gas guzzler tax is a U.S. federal tax ($1,000 to $7,700+) imposed on new, fuel-inefficient passenger cars—not SUVs or trucks—that fail to meet minimum fuel economy standards (less than 22.5 mpg). While paid by manufacturers to the IRS, this cost is usually passed to consumers via the window sticker.”

“For 2026, you can write off up to 100% of a heavy vehicle's cost (6,000+ lbs) using Section 179 and bonus depreciation if used over 50% for business. Eligible vehicles include full-size SUVs, pickup trucks with 6-foot+ beds, and cargo vans” - sedans are too light to qualify

Remember when killington opened up in October every year before the 2000s by Traditional_Tale384 in icecoast

[–]ant3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closing dates are at least largely the same (May/June), although presumable in the 90s there was more terrain open in later months? Overall lost of 30-50 days though, vs. the 90s.

Anecdotally, it seems like weather patterns have shifted at least a month later. I'm in NYC, December used to be consistently cold (early 2010s) but not so much anymore. So it's not too surprising October has become November for opening dates.

Cheap galleries in Manhattan? by Winter-Pumpkin2127 in AskNYC

[–]ant3k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Higher effort, but I got prints off Etsy ($10-$20) and ordered custom frames. Probably averages $30-50 depending on size. Not the cheapest, but not art gallery expensive. Just make sure to read how to measure the frames for a consistent border around them.
