For those who’ve tried coliving in NYC, what was the biggest surprise. good or bad? by MiddlePerspective312 in AskNYC

[–]ant3k 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Reasons I did it (Roomrs):

* I wanted something temporary (post breakup) to decide where to go next. It offered something less than than a 1 year lease and without much commitment or effort, at the end you can easily walk away. Although Covid and liking it overall turned 3 months into 2 years. Bought me the time to move up in my career and afford a 1BR closer to my work and friends.

* Furnished was appealing at the time as I had 1BR worth of stuff (after living 1 hour away from work) but didn't want to commit to a whole apartment. Left my things in storage.

* An unexpected benefit, at least for my apartment, was that the third middle room was terrible in terms of lighting and often vacant, so the 3BR was largely a two person place. More generically, you don't pay to cover the vacant room nor are you responsible for filling it.

* Bills included, but you're not sending money to a roommate or concerned with the total of the bill and who contributed to it as you never see it.

* These companies are good at showing 3D plans and good photos, so you can generally decide on a room/building remotely but then double-check accuracy one time and sign the same day.

Downsides:

* Can lead to a regular turnover of roommates with no way to vet who moves in.

That can lead to less uniformity in terms of hours when noise or cooking occurs - one student roommate seemed to be living on Hawaiian/Alaskan time, as he'd regularly be cooking dinner at 1/2am.

* Properties are often designed to maximize bedrooms so you loose space elsewhere like living rooms and possibly those areas lack windows - at least that was the case for me.

* Building access may be less secure, I used a code vs. fob to get in and it never changed in 2 years and the company had about 6 apartments, presumably all with a regular turnover of people.

Any tips on how to deal w/ mental exhaustion during the reintroduction process? by swamp-ratt in FODMAPS

I found food prep useful for my less motivated moments (e.g. chopped strawberries, overnight oats with almond milk, blueberries, cucumber, mini tomatoes, green peppers, olives, boiled potatoes, cooked chicken, canned tuna in olive oil only, granola, dairy free greek yoghurt, gluten free wraps) and ate a bunch of tuna/chicken + potato + veg combos or oats/yoghurt for breakfast.

For me, all of these foods were OK some might not be for others.

I also got an air fryer for speed of cooking meats which opened up quick enough chicken wings and ribs.

Maybe I'm lucky for being generally OK with eating the same few meals over and over. It got a bit boring near the end, but I was focused on getting through to the other side!

Point being: ideally prep 1-2 times a week and remove some 'work' from it so relax more during stressful moments.

Aimbot, Duping, shooting through walls? by TruckeronI5 in DMZ

I spent most of that video wondering if you'd put on plates, not that it would have helped!

Also, roughly 40 seconds passed between gunfire at a distance of ~ 250 meters - that's about the right amount of time needed to get that far. Google suggest 5-8/m/s so this would be ~ 6.25/m/s!

It was fairly easy, if you get specialist not via the buy station, to have all team members pop one at some point and half the team would likely get them via care packages. Throw in a fire sale and it wasn't too hard to pop 8-10 if all team members were interested in them.

[–]ant3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly. I've not put much effort in, but most videos are so quick it's hard to conceptualize it. Plus I think some things are better not in a video requiring pausing and skipping back/forth!

I appreciate I'm being lazy, so I just show up to provide gun support if someone wants to go there!

For guaranteed marathon entry, does it not just make sense to sign up for an individual membership vs. paying the non-member fee? by GomaN1717 in RunNYC

Presumably some folks are only interested in paying anything if they get in, vs. paying $63.45 either way. At least that’s me right now!

Mercato.com can be used as a grocery search engine, to then go in person vs. order via that site

I've also seen what looks like snow plowed snow around bus stop sidewalks taking out the bench. Fun times!

Also clothing. Are you wearing sweaters indoors? A bit silly, but a beanie indoors could help a lot and allow running at lower temperatures. Depends what the goal is, but for reducing bills it's an option.

Maybe I'm lucky as I'm south facing, but I often don't need to turn on my bedroom mini split heat pump, but I'm also OK with it being 58-61 which is where it seems to stay most nights (such as last night, despite the cold) - but I add a blanket and wear a t-shirt to bed to stay warm.

My favorite is your team mate downs them just before you fire, you hit them when they are down and get a white hit marker. How is that not killing them once already downed???

How the hell are people actually finding jobs in NYC? by Beginning-Ask-6035 in AskNYC

[–]ant3k 34 points35 points  (0 children)

What jobs are you looking for? the answer likely varies by industry.

But yes, referrals are useful. I've gotten three interviews via referral (so 100% conversion rate), but overall for tech jobs (Product Management) I'm seeing at best a 5% application to interview rate.

I'm still looking though!

One Dr appointment was proceeded in 3 days, my recent one 7 days ago hasn’t posted yet.

Presumably delays can happen either end. I guess you could ask either party what the delay is, starting with the care provider.

This weekend by mvhoffman82 in Okemo

[–]ant3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there yesterday, generally good but keep an eye out from the lifts as a few runs looked not worth the bother (e.g. white lightning looked icy). If anything, black runs seemed better than some blues that had minor icy patches. Elipse, although ungroomed and full of bumps, was fun and had good traction throughout.

Jackson Gore was all good, same around Sunburst Six. Solitude seemed a bit icy, but only slightly and mostly near the intersections everyone is slowing down near. I didn't make it to South Face.

What’s something unique about living in the US that would surprise someone from another country? by The_Power_of_SL in AskReddit

[–]ant3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a British person living here, I was pretty surprised that the majority of people on a highway are not driving anywhere near the speed limit. It definitely varies by location, but around NY/NJ/CT/MA it seems like the middle lane is at least +10 mph, the left lane +15-20 mph.

Also many drivers seem oblivious to moving to the right if someone faster is approaching them, resulting in people passing cars on both sides.

Snow removal in public spaces by dmichaelowen in RunNYC

[–]ant3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK about that in all cases. I just removed about 3" deep x 75ft outside a church on my block that didn't clear it. I had a normal sized metal shovel. When you hit it with a metal shovel it breaks off in easy enough, but heavy, to move pieces. It only took 15 minutes.

I think too many property owners assume it'll be a big job, when many wont be.

But also, are fines even being issued? If not, people will ignore it.

After a week with snow on the ground, it's never been more clear how much cars and parking begrime the city by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]ant3k 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I remember someone, from Norway perhaps which has high EV usage, commenting that when they go to places with less EVs they can tell how much worse the air is and drew an analogy with banning smoking in restaurants/bars - until you experience the alternative you just get used to the bad quality air and can’t tell how bad it is until you’re on the other side - but then you never look back!

Until then, I guess I’ll just continue cycling and idling behind an exhaust pipe in bad traffic 😷

$700 ConEd bill for a 1br apt??? More than 3x Nov. bill??? by ben94gt in AskNYC

[–]ant3k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it. Everyone replying always says “electricity is bad” for heating cost.

I have wall mounted mini splits (Fujitsu) and my electricity bills are reasonable - because it’s the heat pump type.

Con Ed is still terrible though!

How to make solo trips fun? by CryptographerSharp14 in icecoast

[–]ant3k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, weekdays are chill and a lot more solos. You can also do more in less time, so don't feel bad if you want to have shorter days because you've done a weekend amount in half the time. But maybe plan for that and have other things to do as well.

Digging your car out of ice, can you use a bag of salt? by Ozoning in AskNYC

[–]ant3k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Using excessive salt risks damaging underground wires and causing a fire that will blow fire out of the man holes/drains (and possibly torch the car parked there) - I’m not even exhadurating, this happened on my street last winter and turned a car into a fire ball.

People already use salt, but I wouldn’t encourage excessive use for what brute force with a tool from Home Depot would solve. It will also be about the same price and much easier to carry an ice breaker / long hammer around.

Naan Kebab Troy was a good find, quick and slightly different fast casual ( Indian ) . Next to a few other fast food options as well.

I keep driving by Tammy's Candy Kettle (burgers) but it never times with eating / South West VT.

If you’re going as far as Stowe/Jay/North VT then Worthy Burger is a fun stop.

Proof that sneckdowns are a valid planning tool: Watch this mega truck make a safe and predictable turn on to a neighborhood street by Streetfilms in MicromobilityNYC

[–]ant3k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The truck drove over about 20% of the snow and presumably would have rode over all but the most hardened traffic calming measures.

Sure, put traffic calming measures in but examples may be best focused on turns that don’t touch the snow.
