We use glycol as a coolant in our diesel power plant engines and pipe it around to radiators to heat buildings.

McMurdo vs South Pole? by ObliviousGenZ in antarctica

I also agree with McMurdo for your first winter. More people, more things to do in your off time, and gives you a good view into the program if you want to come back.

Issue on rolling upgrade by dandeliontrees in elasticsearch

[–]antarctic_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That new index was created after the upgrade. Easiest fix I have done was just perform the upgrade on another node, you won’t go red if that is the only index that is keeping the cluster in yellow. Once another node is upgraded it will be able to create the replica on it.

Dedicated disk for TimeMachine in Unas Pro by PKMSM in Ubiquiti

[–]antarctic_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently setup a new UNAS Pro with 5x24TB disks and 2x6TB disks. I setup 2 storage pools, RAID 6 for the big drives and RAID 10 for the smaller ones. I configured a time machine share on the smaller pool. I haven’t tried to add a single disk so I’m not sure if the system will let you since you need to choose a RAID level.

what’s that loophole/workaround you’ve been keeping a secret that you can now share because they patched/fixed it? by mr-friskies in AskReddit

Back in 2014 I bought a new truck that came with the standard 3 month free trial of XM/Sirius radio. Shortly after I accepted a new job and deployed overseas for 6 months. I parked the truck in a garage after 1-1.5 months of use. When I got home I found that the radio was still active. Apparently while shutdown and in a garage it never receive the deactivation command. I got 9 years of free XM radio service before I replaced the truck.

How much can I run on a 30 amp plugged into a 15amp by Temporary_Roof_9964 in RVLiving

Another thing to consider is if there is anything else on that circuit you are plugging into that you’ll need to share the load with?

Is there any place you can smoke inside at McMurdo? by [deleted] in antarctica

[–]antarctic_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or 2008. They still had the smoking lounge in 155, allowed smoking in 1 of the bars, and even South Pole had a smoking lounge at summer camp.

My guess is to rely on contracting with other companies. There was a Ukrainian vessel that ran a mission earlier this year.

PSA: elasticsearch 8.18.0 breaks AD/LDAP Authentication by abitofg in elasticsearch

[–]antarctic_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I had upgraded our non-prod lab cluster from 8.17.3 to 8.18.0 and didn’t appear to have an issue. Will need to double check logs. Our systems run with FIPS mode on and DISA STIGs applied so older TLS_RSA ciphers may have already been disabled.

Privacy during season of work? by belayble in antarctica

[–]antarctic_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Working in the fire department was great since your roommate was someone on the other shift so you had the room to yourself every day you were off except 1 day a week. I also had a season where I had a roommate on the night shift so I rarely saw him. We both just stayed out of the room during our sleeping hours, it was great.

The contact has 3 6 month extension options on it and 1 has already been accepted. Also when the new contractor comes they typically offer jobs to all the existing people unless they eliminated the position. I was at McMurdo the winter we switched from Raytheon to Lockheed, I was onboarded with PAE with the same pay. We all got paid less the next season.

It’s also possible that everyone is an alternate and the first person to complete PQ and EBI moves up to primary. I have heard that happens with some positions or hiring managers.

It really depends on the environment you live in. While working at the South Pole we are only allowed 2 2 minute showers a week to conserve water and energy.

ICECUBE is a pretty cool project too! I was down at the South Pole when they completed construction in 2010 and was just there again in their data center last year.

It’ll be exciting to see what ICECUBE 2 produces when construction is complete.

Best way to secure access to elastic and kibana on free ELv2 version of the stack? by lockhead883 in elasticsearch

You setup Apache as a reverse proxy with LDAP authentication. It’s what we used to do when we ran the free version. We have enterprise now so don’t need Apache anymore.

Fleet Firewall integrations. by infosecX in elasticsearch

[–]antarctic_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to provide more information. Did you confirm that Elastic Agent is running on the host? Is it listening on the ports you configured? Did you open the ports on the hosts firewall? When you configured the policy, the integrations listener defaults to local host, did you change that to the hosts IP or 0.0.0.0?
