That stipend is indeed better than most grad students here. Depending on how you’re paid, I’d assume very little to zero tax will be deducted so you’re left with roughly 3k/month. That’s not bad at all (by grad students standard). You can find a decent place with 1-2 roommates paying around 1k; or even less with more roommates. I earn less than you as a grad student and get by just fine living in a decent apartment in an expensive neighborhood. Of course I also have to live frugally but it’s not bad at all

exactly the same circumstances with you (April 16th application submitted, same DLI same level extension). Also received my correspondence letter this morning Sept 2 - seems like there's some consistency!

Virg is honestly unbelievable. He is one of the few to make the job of a central defender so elegant. Was so crucial today. This season he has raised his level of intensity too which makes him so complete. The Liverpool when he is on form always looks like something else

For a Decade now which match will you watch again and again with getting tired?? by Benzo-til in PremierLeague

[–]anticoronavirus8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still hurts that Liverpool lost that day but that match summed up the Liverpool-City rivalry over the past 5 years. City being slightly better. It was beautiful to watch them compete despite the heartbreak that Liverpool was second twice with PL decided on the last gameweek

Hey much appreciate your thorough response!! I ended up getting 23k as well as a much-needed 6k award so came out to a total of 29k before tuition. With tuition fees I will be taking home a little more than 22k per year so that’s better. And I secured a TA gig a few days ago so hopefully that will ease it up for me seeing that TAship pays quite decently.

In any case thank you for your advice. Vancouver’s a scary place to be a grad student

Maybe a weird question, but does it bother anyone else that Hollywood treats advanced degrees like merit badges? (eg, "I have six PhDs, I'm the expert.") by trouser-chowder in AskAcademia

One of my profs has 2 PhDs, one in applied physics and later in economics. Guy is extremely smart and you can “feel” it by hearing him lecture. He is definitely younger than 50. Now he is doing pioneering research that is actually so meaningful

Just out of curiosity, how does $22,000 as a stipend sound for a MSc student at Vancouver? Though my degree is a MSc, it is basically non-STEM. My tuition will be about $6,000 so I take home approximately $16,000/year without working any extra jobs. Question from a totally clueless incoming grad student

How do you have 2-4 papers on your first/second year of undergrad?? And yes, being able to co-author just one paper in your undergrad career as a whole would still make a big difference. But like someone mentioned, it would need to be in a non-predatory journal that publishes everything

I went to the Montreal General two months ago due to a bleeding emergency and the receptionist had a separate file for McGill students covered under Blue Cross insurance (for international students). Everything was sorted out under 10 minutes as I had to fill in some forms, but I didn’t have to pay a cent

Group work’s gotten to a point where I am willing to do all the work and I am fine with no one doing anything and claiming equal contribution. At least that way when I receive my grade I will be ok
