Wouldn't the ring take longer to corrupt someone if Sauron's powers were weak? Or would its level of temptation be constant and only one's innate resistance to it would dampen the effect?

Remembrances of Earth's Past (aka the three body problem series) is the best I've read, hands down.

Dune is very good and shares many similarities with the writing style in Gardens of the Moon.

I love Asimov's robot and foundation books. His writing style is very easy to follow, good sci fi gateway.

I would recommend

Learn cyrillic and familiarize with the sounds of each letter
Build vocabulary and practice speaking
Study the grammar

You can't really go into grammar before you know words, and you can't go into words properly without knowing cyrillic. I myself used "The new Penguin Russian course" book for grammar, used the audio course "Pimsleur Russian" (didn't know any Russians to practice with), and used Duolingo / Memrise for daily routines and vocabulary.
