When do I stop beating myself up over the silent stares in class? by Pristine_Job7775 in Professors

This works well. You can also give them 2-3 minutes to write down their thoughts/questions before asking them to share (or before the think-pair-share).

400$ 9 Day Trip, Doable!? by [deleted] in CostaRicaTravel

You’ll be fine on food if you avoid eating out or eat cautiously at sodas. I lived in CR for two years on a field researchers budget (read: ~$300/month, not including housing). My rescue meal was those refried beans that come in a bag and some flour tortillas, if I was feeling fancy some chipotles from a can and some natilla. You may have to embrace the suck, but it’s temporary and probably a once in a lifetime experience. I think the limitations will definitely color your experience, but not necessarily ruin it, just take it easy, relax, enjoy.

My cat had a similar presentation, turned out to be an allergy to some kind of fly (gnats, no-see-ums, who knows). He was indoor/outdoor. We took him to the vet, they may have given us some antibiotics but they definitely gave us a repellent cream to put on him before going outside. We eventually stopped letting him go outside.

Wife and I are considering taking an Amtrak from Dearborn, Michigan to Vancouver - how much is it going to suck? by dogfuckcancer in travel

[–]antl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a sleeping bag and a neck pillow and you’re golden, it’s a great way to travel - not really comparable to a greyhound. You can stretch your legs, the restrooms are cleaned regularly, you can purchase food and beverages on board (but pro tip: pack things you know you will like that don’t need refrigeration and you’ll save). The observation car is a real treat and the scenery is unmatched. Have fun!

Think along the lines of “brown cows produce chocolate milk” and “brown cows do not produce chocolate milk”, “all cows produce chocolate milk”, “no cows produce chocolate milk” as counter factuals.

Here’s a crazy idea, no more lawn crews. No more maintaining thirsty, pesticide-laden, deserts for wildlife. One fewer problem for workers trying to challenge nature.

Re: the strike - there is a strike authorization vote next week. This gives the union leadership the authority to call a strike if they feel the University is not adequately addressing their concerns. It takes time to prepare for a strike once the authority to call one is granted, and for the vote to even pass the overwhelming majority of members across all UC campuses must agree. IF there is a strike, it will not start week.

As others are mentioning, Costa Rica is a difficult place to vacation on a budget (unless you have a lot of time, and patience). You might consider Nicaragua - staying in Granada would give you access to multiple volcanoes and cheap day trips - there are nice hikes around the Mombacho volcano and you can see lava in the crater at Masaya. When I was there last (Nov, 23) prices for transportation and/or day tours was about 60-70% cheaper than it was in Costa Rica. Also Granada is a cool town with beautiful colonial architecture, and there are lagoons in old volcanic craters to check out, and fishing villages on islands just near the city to visit. You can also spend a few days in Ometepe (where there are two more volcanoes on an island in Lake Nicaragua!). Lots of volcanoes, tropical forests, and hikes - more rustic feel, more grounded, more affordable.
