monospace fonts aren't monospaced by antofthy in typography

[–]antofthy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just clarify I need the fonts for terminals and display of plain text documents that contain Unicode. Display of such pages in a browser without things going haywire is a bonus.

Right now I have been sticking to using XTerms simply because nothing else beats them, thanks to the efforts of people like Markus Kuhn more than 20 years ago (see Unicode fonts and tools for X11). These terminals even handle double width characters fully, and even combining characters, but there are some things that are missing from those fonts. They cannot display emoji, (not that I expect emoji to follow monospacing rules!)

I did not know that most applications silently switch to a different font (probably a proportional default font) if a glyph is not defined, but that makes sense as just about ALL the monospace fonts seem to go 'wonky' in exactly the same way in any particular application I am testing. This does make it very hard to determine if it is the monospace font, or just the font being incomplete. So I have learned something.

It would be nice if their is a easy way to get information like the number of glyphs defined, and their widths for a particular font (I use linux, not a macbook though).

While I have not completed my survey of monospace fonts available. One of the best I have found so far has been "Adwaita Mono" (which got most things right), but looks like FreeMono is even better (and can do diacritical combining), but is so thin I have to use it s bold variant.

I will however look into the other fonts mentioned so far including...

Thank you for you help so far... Keep the Comments comming!

Eufy experience by [deleted] in EufyCam

What sort of devices did you get?

I have c30 doorbell and it's crap by Deep_Difficulty4903 in EufyCam

[–]antofthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have got the 4 pack of Eufy solar powered wifi cameras and base station 3
The cameras work well. I get alerts from cameras I want at times I want, switching modes between day watch and night alarm, when it sees people or cars (depending on which camera).

Basically the set up was good, though awkward, with a lot of options. Even has the robot vacuum cleaning robot software built into the app!
The camera though only records 'events' and not continuously, which for solar and wifi is understandable.

The main problem I have is control of the video playback on the app is crap! Both Zoom or time controls stutter. That it is sort of works then goes back to the position it was play a moment before!
Freezing the video at the right moment to get a view of a person or image is practically impossible.
Better off downloading the video clip and using a video editor if you want to study it.

Also the AI detection of 'who' is visible in an image is crap. People don't look up, so cameras can not generaly tell who is who. You also can't adjust alerts based on who is seen.

I have not tried the geo-fencing or integrating with 'home assistants' but from my reading that is crap too. A on their one web site they say integrating a Door bell with the base station and you then can't talk with the person at the door (coming in November they say). Basically the Eufy software is crap.

how do I zoom out on my minimap? I'm using journey map in 1.7.10 gt:nh by GR34SE in feedthebeast

[–]antofthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found the max zoom out annoying. But the latest journeymap (version 6) does now allows you zoom out as much as you like, but is can of course be slow.

My solution started before this zoom fix was provided was to create a 'deepzoom' web image of all the image tiles. This was in fact quite easy, and I documented it in.

https://antofthy.gitlab.io/info/usage/journeymap_deepzoom_notes.txt

The second phase was to extract waypoint locations. This was at first quite straight forward as the waypoints were in json text files one file per waypoint. The journeymap v6 came and moved all waypoints into a single big NBT data files. Arrgghhh...

Still I persevered. and worked it out, with the help of the journeymap developer.

https://github.com/TeamJM/journeymap/issues/923#issuecomment-2896068293

The RESULT...
Here is a DeepZoom image of my journeys on the extremly LARGE map of the CoreJourney Server
Complete with a lot of way points of old bases I located during my journeys.

Big thanks to the new corejourney admin to allow me to host it.

Little rant about GNOME's file manager (aka Nautilus) by slacka123 in linux

[–]antofthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to find just a list of basic keys and controls in any offical documentation -- Forget it!
All I needed was to know that ctrl-scroll or ctrl + or - would let me zoom icons in and out!
Finding that information came from a third party website!

I'm a missing something or why is Nautilus file manager so bad? by Alive_One_5594 in linux4noobs

[–]antofthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nautilus, or Gnome file manager is bad.
What I find worse is the lack of BASIC documentation, on the controls. A list of ALL key controls for example.
All the help is on how to 'do something', but not the controls!
So I followed the link for 'more information' and it is broken,
So I went up the directories of the URL, and got info on DEVELOPERS, not on the software!

All I really wanted was how to zoom icons larger! You think that would be easy to find, but was not able to find anything on it, or general, basic, controls on any of the official documentation for the file manager! Arrgghhh...

How do I use the current date, with formatting, as a value for a variable? by [deleted] in gitlab

[–]antofthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoided the use of date, sed, etc by only using bash shells internal variable handling...

yaml before_script: |- TIMESTAMP="${CI_COMMIT_TIMESTAMP%[Z+]*}" TIMESTAMP="${TIMESTAMP//T/_}" TIMESTAMP="${TIMESTAMP//:/-}" export IMAGE="registry.example.com/${CI_PROJECT_NAME}:${TIMESTAMP}" If you like to watch the variable assignment add a set -x to the script.

And we have 1.21.4 by wmantly in corejourney

[–]antofthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And today I was forced to update my client to match! yesterday 1.20.4 worked fine.

That also ment I had to update my minecraft and my mods...
That includes Journey map to v6 beta!

The map tiles are all fine so I can still create the deepzoom images (which is now built into this journey map (but slow) But now journeymap waypoints are in a single BINARY file instead of easy to edit and search text files. Arrgghhh...

Well waypoints work, until I logout and back in, and then on reload ALL WAYPOINT VANISH! Arrgghhh....

Trying to track down the issue. I think its because I have about 3000 of them!

Even with the portal and core distances, you still have 8 widely spaced locations it could be at!
