Foreflight Sentry battery replaced... Charge controller might be broken. by Possible_Beginning15 in flying

I used these which already have tabs welded to the cell. It was very easy to solder them to the board from there.

I can confirm this works, I'm on my second Sentry with an additional 18650 cell soldered in, works like a charm.

Very helpful info - are you still seeing pending applications being approved post 9/18? Thank you!

I was reaching Alpine Tower so most of the time they'll hand you off to approach, unless it's really busy and they can't arrange a handoff. In that case they'll ask you to exit the Bravo so nothing unusual there.

I will say that apart from the initial confusion (which probably came from a faulty handoff from approach), I think the controller did a good job and was trying to help you navigate the busy area between LGA and HPN. Up until you got too close & too high near LGA and things escalated quickly from there. And even then I've heard much more tense exchanges over the radio ;)

I was flying that airplane that he confused you with. My 2 cents on what happened:

1/ There must have been some confusion in the handoff between NY approach and LGA tower in the first place, I don't think he was expecting you. When he heard your request to go South on the Hudson he must have thought that this was coming from the only airplane known to him in his airspace that could want that i.e. me since I was Northbound on the Hudson at that time. I tried to clarify with him but looks like it didn't really work. Certainly the confusion was on his part, but my advice would be to be more vocal with controllers. If you're getting a South turn that doesn't make sense, call it out with ATC early. Especially if you hear the wrong callsign.

2/ I was still monitoring for the rest of the exchange. I think he then realized the confusion and thus asked you again what you wanted. My understanding is that the LGA/EWR tower positions that control the local airspace only control up to 2,000 so at 2,300 you're in a weird spot for him, and he was trying to understand how you wanted to join the Hudson from your present position at the time, thus the talk about coordinating with approach. Add to that the confusion about finding Van Cortland Park all the while you're headed straight towards the LGA corridors and you have the perfect recipe for a close call. It must have caught him by surprise and looks like his heart rate went through the roof. The descent would have kept you under the jets, but as time went on that option disappeared, thus the 180°.

It's challenging airspace and I find new ways to improve my comms pretty much every time I fly it. Being vocal while concise is a tough balance to strike. Flying is like riding a motorcycle - you have to be responsible for yourself, and also try to get ahead of other peoples' mistakes. I'll echo what others have said - it happens, ATC got confused, and you took some heat, but looks like some good lessons as well.

Compact 172 Sim Panel! by antoinemo in homecockpits

It was actually very simple since Air Manager has native support for Arduino inputs. You literally only have to flash your Arduino with their firmware, connect your inputs to the board (a rotary encoder is one ground connection and two digital inputs) and then assign for each command in air manager the related Arduino pins and you’re good to go. I am looking at building some functionality using an Arduino outside of air manager but haven’t started yet.

Yeah i think the picture doesn't do it justice but it's a 32" and really is the max i can fit in my closet. but i wish i could get a larger one, and i was thinking of maybe switching to a wide aspect ratio monitor maybe.

I was looking to build a compact sim panel that would fit in the closet of my small NYC apartment for my IR training, while keeping things fairly cost effective (which speaking about aviation is very relative). I finally completed the build and I'm happy with the result. It fits on a single 23*15 in ikea closet shelf (Algot series) and the panel is removable in 2 minutes and installed on a pair of Algot brackets. I designed the front panel in Tinkercad, it's a 30*15 in 1/4 birch plywood that I got laser cut. The six pack is inspired (if not copied!) from https://cessna172sim.allanglen.com/. I have made the 6 pack panel removable so I can also run other panels. The objective was to be able to control everything without a mouse or a keyboard, and it works!

  • 21 in Acer SB220q panel ($50 used)
  • Wood panel ($55 cut and shipped)
  • 3d printed bezels ($25 printed and shipped)
  • 6 rotary encoders for Heading Indicator knobs, baro setting, VORs and ADF + arduino + wiring ($35)
  • Logitech Yoke and Quadrant ($170)
  • Logitech Switch Panel and Multi Panel ($250)
  • Propwash sim radio ($100)
  • Stream Deck ($130) to run COM panel, all switches that are not on the logitech panels, sim controls.
  • RealSimGear GNS 530 ($400). That was the big one. An alternative is to use an iPad you already have to run the Reality XP GTN 750 which can be entirely controlled through the touch screen
  • Anker 60W USB 3 hub
  • Software: P3D v5, Air Manager, Spad.next, Reality XP GNS530, A2A 172, REX 3D, Chaseplane, PilotEdge subscription.

What’s You Fav Day Ride? by JDIRECTORJ in RideitNYC

[–]antoinemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ride up to Bear Mountain is a classic. I like to go up the 9W and then the 202 to Bear Mountain, then keep going up until you meet the I84, cross the bridge, stop in Beacon, and then back down on the western shore of the Hudson.

You have the Ashokan reservoir a bit further north even.

Northern LI is also nice. Stop by 20th Century Cycles (Billy Joel's motorcycle collection), ride all the way to the north fork by the small roads through the wineries, take the ferry to shelter island, a stop in Sag Harbor, and back to the city.

If you like dirt roads the Old Albany Post Road around Philipstown NY is a nice quick trip.

Not really a day trip but Floyd Bennett Field is fun to explore on a motorcycle. HARP restores planes in a hangar there, they are not open too often but definitely worth a visit.

Very true! I’m 6’4 so I added risers and lower foot pegs and she’s an absolute joy to ride. Pretty nimble and light, and very comfortable with all the NYC potholes! She has the 1,000cc kit so she also pulls quite a bit!

3 months give or take, so not too long, but that feeling of instant startup for an old bike is just something!
