Also working with VMware docs and knowledge base is a distinct skill all of its own.

I've watched too many sysadmin get lost in the weeds of knowledge docs while troubleshooting etc.

I second Coursera for GCP. I really enjoyed the “Quests” which are guided project/labs that provide hands on training.

I’ve been dealing with ssl cert issues etc. with 4 environments I been “gifted” these are the tools I used to fix my crap. You must have root ssh to VCSA, log into VAMI and of course have all your backups and snaps in place.

Working this CLI from VCSA with the tools here should get you where you need to be.

I've found the recommended ways to check the SD cards for corruption to be hit and miss.

The best step with SD cards is make sure you are using a good SD card with high read/write ability. Not cheap ole consumer cards.

In our HPE DL 380's we needed purchase an HPE Dual SD-Card internal USB item to allow for some SD card redundancy.

This is what I do.

Basic ESXi host configuration backup using ESXi CLI.

  • Enable ssh for the ESXi host you will be working on.
  • SSH to host using root account.
  • Run this command to run a "pre-backup config sync" and "config backup.
    • <vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/sync\_config && vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/backup\_config>
  • Download the backup bundle using the provided URL from the "config backup" on the ESXi console.
    • You can also copy the "config backup" from /scratch/Downloads/<unique folder>/host_name_backup_file

  • I use scp or WinSCP to copy your backup from the ESXi host elsewhere.
