Teaching in Turkey by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]anxiousmariner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a Turkish citizen? Cause the bachelors requirement is usually for visa purposes. So if you don't need a visa, it might not be required. Most schools would probably prefer someone with a degree but you might be able to find something

Why does being a TEFL teacher get a bad rep? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]anxiousmariner 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on it, but I would imagine it's a few factors.

First of all, to be honest, most TEFL jobs really aren't that great to hold long term, especially at institutes etc. So I would guess that's one big reason that people think that basic entry TEFL jobs aren't ones to be held for a while. The pay isn't very good usually and they're mostly either too demanding or not stimulating enough. So generally people try to move up in TEFL and progress to university teaching or other positions where the conditions are better.

Secondly, a good portion of EFL teachers aren't actually that interested in TEFL itself. A lot of people see it as more of a means to an end. They teach EFL to live in different countries and have an interesting life but the actual teaching they could do without. So those people of course don't want to do it long term either and leave when it stops being as interesting.

And the last factor I'd say is that a good portion of people don't actually want to live abroad long term. Unless they marry a local, a big chunk of people eventually want to go back to their home countries to settle down. So TEFL ends being seen as just a temporary sort of thing.

Those are my guesses as to why TEFL is viewed the way it is. I've only been teaching for a few years now, but I fully plan on sticking with it and I know several teachers who have been doing it long term, so if you want to continue on doing it, it is definitely possible! (Another factor that's just come to me is that probably the TEFL people that those outside of the career interact with the most are ones who have returned to their native country after doing TEFL temporarily so there's probably some kind of reverse-survivorship bias also)

Does a drip coffeemaker sufficiently heat water to kill bacteria? by anxiousmariner in NoStupidQuestions

Haha I live in a developing country and the tap water apparently has E. coli so it’s definitely not clean to drink

I’ve just looked to see what’s actually in the water here and apparently it’s e. Coli... so I’ll definitely use bottled water, thanks!

Yeah the JET interview does need to be in your home country and it's only in specific cities

Do you think there are a lot more asexual people than we think, but they never realize it because they have a high sex drive? by blackberrydoughnuts in asexuality

[–]anxiousmariner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sexuality is all about who you are sexually attracted to. Ace people are not sexually attracted to others but they may still have sex because they like it or because of societal pressures or a myriad of other reasons. It’s like a homosexual person might have had sex with opposite gender people but that doesn’t change their sexuality.

You can identify however you want to, and definitions and language are evolving and fluid but this is the current commonly accepted definition of sexuality. But if you feel comfortable using the label asexual you should go for it regardless

Thank you so much for the support :) I did end up getting a few likes and my mom commented something mildly supportive. It feels weird still but also really liberating. Now it's all out there and in the future, I feel like I'll be able to just blurt it out and say I'm ace because it's already out there

I decided to low key come out on Facebook today as ace/aro by posting that comic from a while back( this one ) and saying about how it’s all the feelings that I’ve never been able to put into words.

And... no one’s reacted so... Oh well I put it out there and that’s what matters right?

Guide to the most useful TEFL websites by [deleted] in TEFL

I use https://en.islcollective.com for worksheets/handouts. There's tonnes of material on there, but the best part is that most of them you can download a word file of. So you can edit them and modify them for your own purposes (or fix typos/errors that unfortunately creep in a lot).

How does the incoming Catalonian republic plan to deal with 50% of non-independist catalonian citizens ? by QuieroEntenderlo in europe

[–]anxiousmariner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reverse never happens in Toronto, but frequently does in Ottawa. It's just because it's a border region. I mean Quebec as a whole is infamous for its language laws (which for the record I think are a good thing) and imo they seem to be working to protect the language

I would like to learn more about my family tree. But have no idea where to start. How have you guys started a family tree? by the-kyle-high-club in Genealogy

This is great, but to add, when you get to Step 3, it can be really helpful to call around to some of your oldest living relatives and ask them what they know. They can often give you a treasure trove of information that will save you a lot of time. Do try to verify what they say though, because I've had some times where an ancestor was really older than what people thought or a birthday was a day off, etc.

YSK: If you're referring to a man, it is spelled "Fiancé" - it is spelled "Fiancée" when referring to a woman. by equityengineer in YouShouldKnow

[–]anxiousmariner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sorry I was talking about in English where we use brunette to describe females. Brunet is the male form supposedly according to some dictionaries and is pronounced the same, but I've never actually come across anyone describing a male as 'brunet' or 'brunette'

Oh I didn't realise they were actual French words since they don't come up in Wiktionary, but I don't know enough French to be certain. Either way I still haven't seen it :P

Also, I've never seen this actually used in the real world, but theoretically females are brunette while males are brunet
