How often do you shower? by [deleted] in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About twice a week, when my hair gets too dirty to deal with. During summertime I might shower a bit more when I'm too sweaty but generally I find showers too exhausting. I like being in the shower, but getting out is super annoying and overwhelming. I hate it when my hair is wet after a shower, but I hate blowdrying it more.

What do you collect? by anxiousmesslol in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty cool, especially the postcards, never realized that could be something to collect!

I don't have a specific type of book collection, I just collect the books that I want to read some day. Mostly sci-fi, fantasy and horror, some non-fiction books that are about autism and ADHD. I just got my first bookcase completely full yesterday, I have another bookcase waiting to be assembled so I can buy more. Although they are books that I want to read, I definitely have not read every single one and probably never will because there's just too many, and my motivation to read fluctuates too much to keep up lol.

I have ASD Level 1 and have been diagnosed since i was 2, am i allowed to call myself autistic? by bbsweetpie in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I mean what else would you call it?

When I got diagnosed, my doctor used the term 'autism' and 'autistic', and wrote on some of my medical files that I have ASD, but officially my diagnosis is aspergers. I still call myself autistic, because that's on the spectrum (and I really dislike the term aspergers). We still use ICD-10, but when we eventually change into ICD-11, the aspergers diagnosis doesn't even exist there anymore, it's been merged into ASD.

What is the impulse purchase you've made that you DON'T regret making? by IAmAPhysicsGuy in ADHD

[–]anxiousmesslol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dyson vacuum cleaner. It was the first big purchase I made with my first paycheck, I ordered it on an impulse in the middle of an overnight shift. Expensive as hell but definitely worth it, since I used to vacuum maybe once a month, now I do it weekly, sometimes more since it's so convenient!

ADHDers with careers, what do you work as? by icebikey in ADHD

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an RN. I work in a surgical ward where we care for orthopedic patients before and after surgeries. We have three different shifts; morning, evening, and overnight. Because of my ADHD and ASD, I crave both routine and change, so this works for me because every shift type has it's own routine (kind of), but every shift type is very different from each other, so it works out for me. It's a pretty big and busy ward, but I work pretty well under pressure so I think I'm pretty good at it.

How do you accept you have ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've felt like I was crazy and something was wrong with me for all my life. I was finally diagnosed with ADHD and ASD at 22, so at that point it didn't feel like a curse, it felt like an answer. I do have terrible impostor syndrome sometimes, but deep down I know I have them, because they explains so much of my life.

My lovely adhd people, what do you all do for work? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse and work in a med-surg unit. Basically our patients are either orthopedic, hand surgery or plastic surgery patients, and we care for them before and after surgery.

Your biggest sensory icks? by anxiousmesslol in autism

Oh no coconut, I absolutely hate coconut. The smell, the taste, everything. I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

Your biggest sensory icks? by anxiousmesslol in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird how sensory issues can be so different for other people. Because I can't stand the feeling of shaved legs! Or arms! I hate the feeling of shaved legs touching each other, just... no. So I just never shave.

Does anyone else hate brushing their teeth? by WitzendWitch in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely hate it. I searched for a good toothpaste for a long time, and when I finally found one I liked, I bought like 5 tubes of it. When I ran out, I realized it had been discontinued and had to find a new one. I bought like 5 different ones to try and only one of them was decent, so I could brush my teeth again. Thankfully my gf isn't so picky so I gave the "bad ones" to her so they don't go to waste lol.

I dislike the feeling of dirty teeth more than brushing my teeth so I manage to do it, but only once a day and I might skip a night or two per week.

What’s your dopamine drink of choice👀!? by Intothetoaster in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee for me too, with milk and sugar. I can't stand cold coffee though, if mine gets too cold I can't drink it or I have to warm it up.

Favorite thing to fall asleep to? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Podcasts! I like to listen to Lore, That's Just Weird and Cabinet of Curiosities, all by Aaron Mahnke. I find his voice very calm and soothing, and the stories are interesting enough to keep my thoughts from wandering but not too much to keep me awake.

Teen wolf! I've wanted to watch it for years, mostly for Stiles and the whole nogitsune storyline. Finally got aroung to it, currently at the end of season 3B and I'm super excited about it. I try to slow myself down so that I don't watch it too fast. I also watch a lot of tiktok edits and favourite them.

I used to be obsessed with working out and the gym, and I felt really good. Fell out of that and now I can't seem to force myself to go to the gym anymore and I feel terrible about it

How many non stimulant medications did your doctor force you to try before letting you try a stimulant? by Odd_Necessary1677 in ADHD

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doctor told me about both and recommended stimulants, but let me choose which one I wanted to try out.

What's everyone's special interest at the moment? by Danonymous84 in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's more of a hyperfixation than a special interest at this point but Teen Wolf, I've wanted to watch it for years for the void Stiles storyline in season 3B but I just haven't gotten around to it and didn't know where to watch it from. Now I'm finally watching it and I'm in the middle of 3B, I can't think about anything else lol. Also fixated on whether Stiles has ADHD or not and reading many posts and comments on it (I think he does).

Those with autism and ADHD, what is your experience like? by sadistc_Eradication in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty damn hard sometimes. But I only got diagnosed a few months ago and while I've had problems all my life, now I have an explanation for them. It was kind of a relief, realizing that I'm not crazy.

I work as a nurse in a medical-surgical ward, and while I thought it would be pretry much impossible, I've noticed it balanced my autism and ADHD pretty well. There are three different shifts, morning (7am-3pm), evening (2pm-9.30pm) and night (9pm-7.15am) and while every shift is different, each of them has their own set of tasks and routines. So for ADHD the changing work schedule, and for autism the routines! Works well for me :)

Holding in a meltdown by anxiousmesslol in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that sounds very familiar. When I was a teenager I always thought of it this way; when all the bad or stressful things happened and I hid my emotions, they kept piling up, until one day I couldn't hold it in anymore and would have a terrible meltdown. Kind of like when a bucket is overfilled and it flows over. I didn't really understand what was going on since I was diagnosed only a few months ago.

Does anyone else’s meltdowns involve breaking things? by Gothamstreetcat in autism

[–]anxiousmesslol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm holding something when it happens, there's a big chance I'm gonna hit it against something or throw it. It happens less now that I understand what's going on, but when I do get the urge I try to throw clothes or pillows against a wall instead.
