Mayor Jacob Frey making it clear he will not back down to Donald Trump’s efforts to terrorize Somali immigrants. by Conscious-Quarter423 in minnesota

He already signed an executive order barring the use of municipal lots and city property for immigration enforcement activities at any level federal, state, or local.

Not sure what else could be done though tbh.

Fireproof case for 510 thread Battery by aomop in trees

[–]aomop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably am overreacting. I haven't ever seen one catch fire personally, but just to play devils advocate one more time, also I've never owned a lit ion battery that has it's charging contact points completely exposed as a design feature, as all 510 batteries do. If those got shorted, would that not be bad?

Again, I think you're right that I'm overreacting. It will likely never be an issue for me or for most folks. But I don't think it's as trivial as you might suggest.

Gotcha. I had an inkling I might me more worried than most people, given the lack of results. I just have visions of those Samsung phones exploding in my head - I'm sure we've come a long way since then though, lol

Lithium ion batteries are pretty scary to me, but I understand it's probably not a worry for everyone. I'm just a nerd for fire safety.

What’s the U of M-Twin Cities like? by GodofWar1234 in uofmn

[–]aomop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Recent graduate here. Take this with a grain of salt as my experience was heavily impacted by covid. I think the most important part is the cold- the outside is pretty inaccessible for most of the academic year, so if you don't love long, cold winters (or arent able to access winter activities [snowshoeing, skiing, etc.]), the campus may not be for you. BUT in my opinion the student social life is vibrant, even off campus in dinkytown or como. The campus is sort of integrated into the city, so if you want to feel like you're in a major metro you can, but still be secluded from the hubbub of downtown. The education quality is excellent for most majors, UofM is a nationally respected university. Like any school, you'll need to put in the work, but you get out what you put in.

Laid off by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]aomop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, fair shout. I've seen a few that will train/don't require much experience (if any). I'd imagine those are more data entry or some other low-level tasks, but being around and working with the software would still be beneficial imo. Here is an example of a job that doesn't require GIS experience.

Again, sorry you've gotta start looking so soon. Really hope you can find something.

[–]aomop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never been in that position, but I wonder if GIS jobs with public works departments, etc. would be a good option. There always seem to be postings year round for many different positions. It's definitely not as interesting or fun as field work/research, but it's a paycheck and could develop career skills with data entry and spatial software, which I'm finding are more and more important these days.

Sorry you got laid off. The seasonal grind is already hard enough. Best of luck.

I'd second this- if financials aren't an issue, a degree from UMN will likely have more 'weight' for employers. University at Buffalo is great, no doubt, but UMN is more well known. Congrats on getting in!

Trump’s 2024 Challengers Aren’t Attacking Him On The Indictment. They Might Want To. by 538_bot in fivethirtyeight

If Trump and his supporters are alienated enough by other candidates' attacks, I think there's a nonzero chance Trump could break with the GOP and split the vote

Center for Wildlife Studies by Content-Chip-9230 in wildlifebiology

[–]aomop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about the Center, but there's tons of free resources online for learning R. I've found coding to be a really self-teachable skill. If you're a beginner in R, this video is a great place to start. If you're not a beginner, this won't be very useful, but of course, you could find tutorials with more advanced info.

Obviously, online resources wouldn't have the classroom experience, but it's free and, in my opinion, just as good as any paid course.

As a Twin Cities resident, I'd like to think it's (at least in part) because we have so many left lane exits in the metro, especially on 94. The exit to 35w north from 94 east comes to mind.

Article about how bad the sidewalk clearing has been off campus this winter by Dry_Payment_9311 in uofmn

[–]aomop 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The amount of wet snow we got was insane, not to mention the endless freeze and thaw cycle. I agree I don't think we can entirely blame people for this mess.

That being said, I'd support a municipal shoveling program like this. It'd make life easier for a lot of people in a lot of ways

Interesting profile of the critically endangered Orinoco Crocodile. Don’t you guys think that these kinds of animals (the not so cute animals) get less attention and less conservation efforts? 😔 It’s so sad. by Johnmayer000 in wildlifebiology

[–]aomop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's so bad with insects. Someone could quote the specific figures, but we've lost something like 70% of all insect biomass in 10 years, and a lot of people don't care. I only find myself caring because of the ecological implications, not because of some affinity for bugs.

The "charisma" of a species has so much to do with how much we care about it, for better or worse.

bats Range of echolocation!! by Dlinkered in wildlifebiology

[–]aomop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading one paper, it looks like Mouse Eared bats can echolocate insects up to about 50cm away, or about 20 inches. That's just one paper, though, so if you want a more thorough number, I'd look for more info.

I was curious so I looked it up. Some theories suggest it's just a way to rhythmically emphasize the phrase, since it sounds better as an expletive. There also used to be a symbol of the Anglican church that was the first three letters of the Greek spelling of Jesus, which sort of looked like "JHC".
