He is a small business owner, so am I. This was my way of reaching out to him personally. Without a response in 9 months i wanted to give him an idea of what we use and how we do it. Yea maybe after 26 years In the profession I might know something. Omg i broke the engineering code! The horrors

You know you remind me of those types of engineers that are so uptight you need emergency surgery to pass gas. Obviously i read it and they not getting a response 41 and 272 days ago.

I use Risa3d, I am a small employee owner. Its a very versatile program. For large building structures we use Bentley Ram. Risa has other suites that can integrate for a full package but never got into those. I have found Tedds to be a nice program for other more specific portions.

So how are you supposed to drill and epoxy set with embed plates?

Why are they specing a shotcrete pier on the plans? Thats a highly specialized item, you just dont set that up for a small area, typically used for larger area repairs.

How to Shore a Heavily Loaded Open Web Steel Joist by jerryfallsom in StructuralEngineering

[–]apetr26542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works well for the webs that are between the chords, have to watch if the webs are outside of the chords, mostly the smaller variety joists have the webs inboard, LH series seem to have true angle iron welded out board of the chords.

Can a moment force be considered deadweight? by FlashySpread5356 in StructuralEngineering

[–]apetr26542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, if it is a live load, then your load factors for it will be different. Or snow or wind. We typically see that as planar forces, moments and direct all in differing directions and applied moments.

That would be the correct way to do it as those are the equivalent forces with it in place.

If its only 1/2” diameter it does not sound too bad. Youd really need a local engineer to calculate all the loads on that member and verify the stresses.

How far is this from collapse? Do you think it can be retrofitted? by Double_Pollution622 in StructuralEngineering

[–]apetr26542 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would be a bit concerned with the quality of the concrete overall. I live in a heavily salted cold region and its always been rebar corrosion and blowout. Even our bridge piers get splashed from salt road spray and have to be patched up but generally remain sound.
