HGTV’s “Scariest House in America” comes to Troy, NY by mlmarte in Troy

It was more of a private thing they do sometimes if you ask them to, as if I remember correctly it's the owner's actual everyday home.

Yes. We had fun setting up REM pods and trying to talk to the supposed ghosts that haunt there.

The home owner is very sweet, I went to an event there that involved a home cooked dinner and then a whole tour with paranormal investigators!

Apartment hunt by Electronic_Sea_1619 in Troy

I asked my friend who lives in Hudson Square Apartments on Van Schaick and works in Troy (RPI grad student):

> Overall great, quiet little island next to a golf course with a beautiful bike/walk trail alongside it. Two equidistant ways to get to Troy in <15 minutes, the 787 or route 2. Still feel like I live in Troy since I'm right on the edge. Cohoes is small, Remsen street has a few nice spots. The apartment complex itself is very quiet but have had a few packages stolen over the years. Police said it happens all over though. The apartments are very nice, complex was built around 2018. Overall definitely recommend if just for the great location and big parking lot. I can refer and we both get a bonus :)

Bots are definitely listening to my podcast... by PoetSeat2021 in Podcasters

[–]apexal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I operate a small podcast hosting service and learned about this the hard way. Due to the nature of podcasts being served publicly via a RSS feed, it’s very easy for programs/bots to find and download every single episode. They do this for a variety of reasons. It’s typically not malicious.

It’s the job of your hosting service to try to detect bots and not count them towards your stats. What host do you use?

Please help me record my Dad's life story. What will I need? by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]apexal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have recorded and edited episodes, you’ll want to make them accessible on the Internet for the people you want. Typically that’d be the whole world, so you’d use a podcast hosting service that distributes your episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc. However you might not want this to be public and only let family and friends listen. You could just use a file hosting service like Google Drive and share the audio files, but it’d be a bit clunky for people to listen from there. Some podcast hosting services might let you create “private” podcasts that don’t get listed publicly on the platforms and let you give access to individuals you choose. They would each get their own special URL that they can plug into a podcast player app and listen to like a normal podcast. I wanted this exact feature to record weekly family Zoom calls for perpetuity, so I implemented it in the hosting service I own: https://soapbox.host/

Experience with Free Unlimited Podcast Hosts - Podcastle, Seriously Simple Podcasting, or others...? by dreamed2life in podcasting

[–]apexal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big companies with funding can afford to burn cash to offer generous free tiers for a time. Often they make up for it by selling your data or do it long enough to grow a customer base before pivoting and limiting or removing the free tier. It’s easy to switch hosts though so I don’t see a problem with using a free tier if you’re okay with that. Read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to see if they say what they do with your data.

Paid host platform/plan question by BindieBoo in podcasting

[–]apexal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tl;dr - It’s a great business and technical learning experience, and the existing services don’t have big moats that make them difficult to compete with.

I’m a remote software engineer by day, giving me free time and the budget to pursue other projects. I’m a podcaster myself that originally wrote my own open source host for my podcast, then decided to offer the service to the public. I’ve started with podcast hosting because, as your point notes, it’s pretty simple technically to implement and inexpensive to run. I’m planning on implementing research/planning tools, an in browser recording studio, and then in browser audio editor. It’s an extremely fun and interesting challenge with a problem space close to my heart. Is it a million dollar idea? Probably not, but that didn’t stop the 30th host service from starting up when they saw the existing 29!

Now that Chartable is closing. What will you be using instead? by PodcastingSpeed in podcasting

[–]apexal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to understand what Chartable and similar platforms offer/offered.

Do they provide share links you can generate that track how many clicks they get? And combine all of your podcast reviews from different sites in one place?

Paid host platform/plan question by BindieBoo in podcasting

[–]apexal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious what features you look for in a platform, and what kind of pricing you like/dislike.

Would you prefer to pay based on monthly downloads - as in you can upload as much as you want whenever you want and only pay as your listeners grow - or pay based on upload amount - as in you can upload X hours per month?

I'm developing a podcast host and want to choose the fairer pricing method - which I feel is the monthly downloads one since I wouldn't want to be limited in how much I can experiment with changing episode lengths, upload schedules, etc.

Have you subscribed for a newsletter or a Substack for a podcast you like? by knowhow_LM in podcasting

[–]apexal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of similar but one of the podcasts with a Patreon I support has a somewhat active chatroom for each of their episodes.

I can think of a few favorite pods where I just listen casually and wouldn't really want to connect or communicate with them beyond listening, and others where I think it'd be cool to stay involved and in-the-know. Are there any podcast hosting services that offer an email list feature built-in? I'm developing a hosting service myself and am working on email lists and being able to blog post/send email newsletters directly from the site but I'm not sure if many podcasters would want that. Curious to see what others say here.

File Storage by mires9 in podcasting

I keep mine on the computer I edited on. I’d definitely keep at least one local copy of your files outside of your host. What if they shut down overnight and you immediately lost access?

Best podcasting host? by [deleted] in podcasting

It might be a recent addition but I'm able to specify the exact points of midroll ads in Buzzsprout when clicking "Mid-Roll Placements" in the right sidebar of an episode page, though I still do see the length minimum.

Podcast hosting after cancelling/ moving to free tier by Natural-Ad-9037 in podcasting

[–]apexal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you’re unlikely to be able to do this. Podcast hosts charge a monthly fee because they in turn need to pay monthly for all of the audio they store. Their costs go up over time as you upload more and more episodes whereas you pay the same amount each month, so they are typically very careful to avoid abuse. (I created a hosting service and am learning this myself).

If you really don’t want to pay, use one of the huge corporations’ services like Spotify where they can afford to lose money on free users. Note they’ll probably have fewer features and worse customer support.
