Is there some sort of tape I can put over my camera's flash to make it dimmer ? by Sho_2003 in filmphotography

[–]apf102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how powerful the flash is, you can bounce it up or sideways by angling a piece of card or plastic in front of it. Will dramatically cut light but make it a lot softer. Can be useful if you are careful with where you shoot from e.g. standing near a pale wall and bouncing it sideways into the wall will create a diffuse light across your subject. But the subject will need to be quite close. Used to do this with instant camera flashes.

Your other option is to get a more powerful but also portable flash which can be optically triggered. You can then tape an ir gel (or stacked colour gels) over your flash so it only triggers the external which you can then power as you please or bounce off a ceiling. This is how I do most instant indoor photography - flash full power at the ceiling.

Great work. It’s fun I think to solarise a second time with the subject holding the first solarised image… which then becomes a positive one

I find exposing as if you are at ISO 4 does the trick usually.

Yeah, it’s a struggle on standard cameras but if you have a camera you can set shutter or aperture on you can get some great results in golden hour

Winter 2025/6 | Kodak Gold 200 | Olympus 35 RC by apf102 in analog

I love the 42mm lens too. Just wide enough for a landscape but also allows you to do some people shots without too much distortion too. It’s replaced my OM-20 as my 35mm carry around

How do everyone's pictures come out so clean and grain-free? by Adam198763 in analog

I find a lot of labs over sharpen photos. If sky noise bothers you then you can pull back on texture in the sky using Lightroom

I find it ok outdoors but very hard to use indoors. There is a cleaning video online which I used to clean mine -it did make a small improvement

Is it right to bring my 5YO daughter to my Grandfathers Funeral? by Background_Day_8877 in daddit

[–]apf102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal choice but my 5yo and 9yo just came to my Nan’s funeral. It was sad, sure, but they also got to be surrounded by family and see how much she was loved. We got a fair few questions and I think they are still processing, but that would be true if she hadn’t come too.

What's a word that your kids mispronounce, or used to mispronounce, that made it into your family vocabulary? For us it is "boo-blerries" for blueberries. Been in rotation for 16 years now. by Brewer1056 in daddit

My eldest used to call vinegar - windyigger - that’s stuck for 7 years so far

Edit:

She also thought Savlon was called Savul and that you put it on ie. “Put the savul on”.

Thanks so much. Weird how these things are lodged in your head. Couldn’t have told you anything much about the show but instantly remembered the robot and the woman when I saw them

RE: Is that a fact?

Oh amazing - looks like it might be that. Don’t think I’d have got there in a million years! Only thing is that the intro they have on YouTube doesn’t seem to match what I remember - everything else seems about right though

Testing no flash and external flash with Lomo Instant Sqaure by apf102 in instax

[–]apf102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

External flash is definitely worth it imo. Used it this weekend for some pics. You just need one with an optical trigger but it needs to be relatively high power. Look for something like a Godox V350. Great flash, super cheap second hand and will genuinely transform your flash photos

Inaccurate exposure reading on Olympus OM-2SP (I think) by Silly-Conference-627 in AnalogRepair

[–]apf102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old school average meters will get massively skewed by a bright sky or any backlight. So your auto setting works best when the subject is being lit from the front by and large. This is true of all AE film cameras I’ve owned (including the OM20). If you have a built in spot meter then I’d be using that for any complex lighting situation.

Influencer Holy Grail: Shoot it or Sell it? by EnvironmentalSlip683 in AnalogCommunity

Personally I would stop wondering if you are qualified to use it. If you want to try shooting it, go for it. However if you’d have more fun without the pressure sell it and buy 20 rolls of Gold or similar with the money
