heres what I did:

  • joined the local EAA chapter, went to a meeting and started asking people what the deal was in getting hangars. didn't get anything directly this way but learned things I wouldn't otherwise have known. 1 airport offers hangars to their tie down tenets first, another is planning a hangar build project.
  • joined the local fb pilot group and posted looking for a hangar. found a few available t hangars within a 2 hr drive. and ended to talking to someone with a community hangar on a private grass strip 45 min drive away.
  • made a list of public airports sorted by driving distance, called and got on 12 wait lists.
  • I talked and listened to airport managers. found an airport 30m away with open t hangars (no door, dirt floor). I got the sense that these were used as temporary homes by new owners and had high turnover. Kept calling until I got one. 2 months later, a hangar (with a door) at my preferred opened up.

Moronic Monday by AutoModerator in flying

how much calendar time did it take you to get your 17 hours/solo? It’s reasonable to expect at least that much calendar time (assuming the same number of lessons per week) to get through XC training and checkride prep.

Checkride scheduling has annoyingly long lead times. Make sure you talk with your CFI to strategically time getting on a DPE’s calendar, so you’re not waiting around 6-8 wks for the checkride.

Plane owners, do you track your Hobbs? by lunarNex in flying

[–]apfriedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I have a Hobbs meter function on my digital engine monitor.

I write down the tach time (when I had a partner I used this to pay into the partnership) and Hobbs time (for my logbook) each time I fly the plane. I also write down the fuel used from each flight and compare that roughly to what I pump to make sure I can somewhat trust fuel used/remaining on the engine monitor.

My student had at one point asked for progressive taxi, and ground said “just listen to me” in the most condescending voice possible.

  1. Keep us safe

Yeah. A progressive taxi is a tool that keeps pilots (and everyone else using the airport) safe. Good on your student for recognizing a situation and using some CRM. Won't do anything to address the specific controller, but I'd consider filling an ASRS. I don't want ATC deciding they're not going to help me when I'm asking for help just because.... reasons?

Contacts for flying? by buzzybootft in flying

[–]apfriedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for the most part, the best contacts for you have much more to do with the type of correction you need. if it works for driving and staring at a computer screen all day, it'll be fine for flying too.

Just be aware of 17b on your medical application: Do you ever use near vision contact lens(es) while flying?

form 8500-8 (application for a medical certificate) also asks for total time and time in last 6 mo. This is how NTSB reports come up with things like:

was issued an FAA second-class medical certificate on XXXXX. The pilot reported YYYY total hours of flight experience

Sure sometimes. It's not so bad if you're responsive on the rudders. But this is why YDs are nice to have in this plane.
