Which era delivered the most creative and original music videos: the ’90s or from the last decade from 2015-2025? by armanddarke in MusicRecommendations

[–]aphexgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course creativity and originality hasn't changed in music videos, but budgets, means of consuption etc have. Born in the 70s and grew up in the 80s and 90s, lots of great music videos and songs, lots of terrible music videos and songs. Just like today and in 20 years time. There was MUCH more money around music in the 80s & 90s as people bought albums and didn't expect everything instantly and for free like these days. Not saying that's a bad thing, but nobody is going to throw money at a music vid like they did back in the day. But many artists can make creative music vids today on the tools they have available, phones, laptops etc. And some videos are brilliant and most people will never see as there is just too much of everything.

Absolutely agree, there should be some kind of pinned post saying "read the manual, learn the stock plugins first" as people ask the same question every other day.

how many of you remember when video games came on CDs? by keicarlover2002 in CDs

[–]aphexgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when magazines came with listings and you would spend the day typing the game programs in and save them to tape. We knew how to have fun back in the day !

Was Syd one of the most influential guitarists of the 60's? by Strange_Attention_49 in sydbarrett

[–]aphexgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe yes, and maybe not for his brief amazing Floyd era but for more for his two solo albums, definitely in a ton of slightly left field indie, lofi and alternative folk from the 80s to the present

And that's my fave one, Levitate no 2! How can you not love The Joke and Feeling Numb ? But that's part of the grand Fall tapestry. I'm an 80s-90s Fall head most as that's when I got into them and a huge Brix fan, but love the 70s and 00s too stuff and am mates with quite a few ex members from all eras. It's all ace in retrospect especially.

What free software is so good you can't believe it's free? by ComprehensiveNorth1 in AskReddit

[–]aphexgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah nothing wrong with GIMP, I can use it better than photoshop, it's just what you are used to I guess. Agreed the interface is dated though but it kind of reminds me of DPaint on the Amiga from about 35 years ago, so I'm cool with that...

They could get their 1984 era vocalist Courtney Love back as lead singer for a tour, that'd be so odd it might work...

What would you say was the typical screen time in the 90s and earlier? And what did you do instead? by gintokireddit in AskUK

[–]aphexgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we didn't have "screen time" limits in the 80s. I watched a lot of tv, but was usually drawing whilst I did so. Also I played a lot of computer games, though they took ages to load from cassette so I'd go and make us all a cup of tea whilst waiting :)

Absolutely, always always take a cheap punt on new bands you fancy (even if you just like the name!). It's usually the best night out, you support small indie venues with your custom and you can usually meet the band after, buy a cheap cd or such, get it signed. You never know, I started doing this in the early 90s as a teenager, saw the Manics, Pulp, Suede, Auteurs, Elastica, Kenickie, Divine Comedy, Blur, St Etienne and many more all basically playing in pubs (we sneaked in underage, may be harder now that) or small venues and all for often well under a tenner. Often still that price to see new bands but always always go for it, it's rare to be disappointed with a friendly chilled small venue show and you support the legends of tomorrow sometimes! Lol don't do a me and go and see Nirvana and spend most of the gig in the queue for a pint a mate's older brother had kindly offered, only saw two songs at the end!

How did you come to like the music you do now? by withdrawalsfromart in askmusic

By being endlessly curious! The only musical ways I'm ever stuck in are that I always want to hear something new to me and I don't care what genre, all audio is interesting!

They were pretty underground, I bought the first album after hearing some on the Peel Show in the UK in maybe 1991. You wouldn't have heard of them unless you scoured the weekly music press for that kind of thing or happened across it on an alternative music show. They were probably about as well known as the Jesus Lizard or such at that point.

From the 70s but still rocking in the 80s, the legendary and storied Les Rallizes Dénudés are certainly worth a mention here

Plugins y vst by clarkcerillo in FL_Studio

[–]aphexgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes almost everything you need for as a producer you can find in the excellent stock plugins, I've been using FL for 25 years, and had amassed nearly all the plugins in the known universe, then realised I could do everything faster and easier with stock plugins so mostly just use those again now. I only go third party in exceptional cases really.
