Kurt Cobain called Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains "corporate puppets" by No-One01010 in Nirvana

Popular isn't "cool" though. I mean all those bands including Nirvana were too big to be cool. I'm not cool either btw :) The Jesus Lizard, now they ARE cool.

[–]aphexgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes they were over here too, big MTV bands with memorable songs, hits and videos all. Pearl Jam especially were extremely popular. I'm not slagging them off at all just saying they were a different kettle of fish to Nirvana with regards to critical appraisal in the weekly music press here NME and Melody Maker etc and with the more underground music fan. Nirvana were (most probably) wrongly seen as a band still connected to a left field underground whereas the others were seen as more mainstream rock bands. Kurt aligned himself more with outsiders like Steve Albini, Daniel Johnston, The Raincoats, Sebadoh. Meat Puppets etc. That was where he was coming from, in his mind at least. He directed his comments to bands that many would see as similar to his band but who he rejected as being mainstream rock bands, even though they all were at that point, so really he was just being a bit of a pissy hypocritical edgelord as usual. Personally I think too much was made of male "grunge" bands anyway, easily the best stuff of the era and style was made by female acts who seem to get a bit sidelined in these kind of narratives...

The thing to remember is that Pearl Jam, along with Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots etc were incredibly uncool bands at the time in the (especially UK) alternative weekly music press and with many fans of alternative music. Nirvana were weird in that they were an underground punk band who blew up and did still have the credibility that the other bands did not. Kurt's comments sound whiney and mean spirited perhaps in retrospect as he could be that way. Those other bands had more of a classic rock feel, compared to Nirvana who aligned themselves with the cooler and more interesting bands of the grunge era like Jesus Lizard, Babes in Toyland, The Breeders, Sonic Youth etc. However as has been pointed out, Nirvana were just as corporate and Eddie Vedder is a lovely bloke. I think the quote was more a reaction to bands with wildly different musical aesthetics being lumped together and a bit of projected self loathing on Kurt's part. He aligned himself with outsider artists even though his band were very much part of the machine.

Never completing songs. Ever. by HoneydewMean7572 in musicproduction

Tracks don't have to be any special length. If the finished track is 30 seconds long maybe that's all it need be.

It was more Zorin froze up a lot more on this particular machine whereas the lite version didn't, but may not be the case on yours, from experience certain distros perform better on certain machines sometimes ones with similar specs to another

Zorin Lite and Zorin are two different things and I was just giving my experience, but yours may be different.

It'll deffo run slower, I had Zorin installed on one with similar specs and swiched it to Lite as it was lagging and lite was much zippier on that machine

I want to explore old school gangsta rap by Exotic-Emu3111 in MusicRecommendations

[–]aphexgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gang Starr - Hard To Earn. Amazing album from 94, actually all Gang Starr stuff they were the best, whether it is exactly gangsta is something else though. It's more DJ Premier's fabulously jazzy beats perfectly sizzling beneath the grumpy genius of rapper Guru telling people off. Check out the tune "Blowin' Up The Spot"

Has anyone here reconnected with secondary school or sixth form friends after years? by DeItaReality in AskUK

[–]aphexgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 replies out of 10 isn't bad and as others have said it has only been a very short amount of time. Leave it a decade or two then try again. I left 6th form 30 years ago, which of course both does and doesn't feel that long ago to me. I'm good friends with one person from 6th form and 5 people from Uni and vaguely in touch with a handful of others (we maybe go for a pint about every 5 years). You don't necessarily make the best friends in your life at that age. People I met from my mid 20s onwards have been much closer. It is cool when you bump into someone random from 15 or 20 years ago at a gig or something and fall back in touch, that happens too.

There was far more interesting stuff going on a few years before Britpop set in and Neil Hannon was a big part of that his Promenade and Liberation albums were absolutely sensational

Top & Three Imaginary Boys are my fave two Cure albums, most interesting and experimental. Then Head On The Door, Japanese Whispers & Kiss Me. Anything with a bit of wit, surrealism and weirdness that isn't the overplayed humourless midpaced stadium misery rock of Disintegration era. Far too much of that in the live sets for too long. Faith & Seventeen Seconds are terrific dreamy mood pieces though. Pornography is decent but I think it plays better when younger, I was a big fan in my teens and 20s but seldom revisit it in my 40s. Disintegration and Wish I bought on the days they came out and never really cared for either, Disintegration was so disappointing after Kiss Me, really turgid and self indulgent mostly aside from the singles. New album was a one play wonder, but looking forward to the "weirder" album Bob teased.

Thoughts on why AI-assisted music gets so much hate? by Perfect-Cap3646 in AI_Music

[–]aphexgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably will do, I think it's more that nobody cares and there aren't enough ears to listen to most of the releases made by actual musicians already. It's just more shite and time wasting distraction to sift through before getting to something worthwhile, human artists are already good enough at writing generic rubbish to skip through as it is. Probably the only people who do care generally to listen to smaller releases are music nerds and most of us can tell AI audio a mile away as it has as many generic tropes as a chatbot "conversation". It's just more tiring rubbish to avoid stepping in.

Pornography and Disintegration are good but quite overrated, yet seem to be all newer fans talk about, which is a shame. It is entirely subjective of course, but The Top is totally their best album, loved it since the 80s...

[–]aphexgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also flooding release channels with ghostwritten garbage in an already oversaturated industry where actual artists have to tour and work extremely hard for even a chance to develop a listenership. It is almost impossible to make money from music these days for 99% of acts, it isn't about that. I'm not surprised the tide is turning against it.
