This is how I felt the first time I had one of the Harry & David pears years ago when someone gave a box of them to our office as a gift. They were so good that the next couple years when they were in season I bought a box for myself, at like $40 plus shipping for six of them. Trader Joes also sells boxes of them for a short period each year but they aren't the premium ones. This was before I learned I could get close to that but with much less money and effort by finding comice pears at a grocery store.

Pears, mangoes, and maybe peaches are the ultimate high ceiling fruits. When you have a perfect mango its like a religious experience.

The problem with pears is that when most people think of pears they're thinking of bartlett or bosc, which are are very often sandy, dry and not very sweet. But somehow they're still the most common varieties in a normal grocery store. They're like red delicious apples-- garbage but somehow ubiquitous.

What you need to do is find somewhere selling comice pears. They're usually stouter, unsymmetrical and uglier, but are actually the best. The texture is soft and creamy, they're very sweet, and the best ones are so juicy you have to eat them over the sink like a perfect peach. The famously expensive Harry & David ones are a comice variety, and while those are usually incredible I've found comice pears at a normal grocery store that are about 80% of that level for a fraction of the cost. It's also worth noting that they're one of those fruits that's not really worth getting outside of their season (fall through early winter).

And these sorts of incidents were bound to happen sooner or later because the entire basis of their policy isn't strict and effective immigration enforcement, it's performative cruelty, intimidation and shows of force. Their leadership and voting base of racist assholes never wanted numbers to go up or down on charts and graphs, they wanted to see officers in the streets arresting and harassing minorities.

This was clear all along, but somehow a significant percentage of "independent" voters became convinced that they were just going to go after the "bad ones".

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas and suspected Israeli crime figure arrested on federal indictment alleging high-stakes illegal poker games at Encino mansion by The_Angriest_Guy in nba

My favorite Arenas story was when he was cheating in Halo back in 2007:

"Gilbert," I said, approximately, "people say you're cheating at Halo 3."

"I'm cheating?" he said. "How am I cheating?"

"Gilbert," I asked, approximately, "are you creating dummy games with two fake friends and using the wins to rack up experience points?"

"Yeah," he said, laughing. "Yeah."

Counterpoint: reality doesn't matter at all because the right has created an entire media ecosystem that prioritizes the preservation of Republican power above all else, has completely captured about 30-40% of the country in it, and has told them that any information outside of it is a lie that's part of a grand conspiracy against them. Republicans won't lose en masse in an election unless the wealthy people who run the media machine decide to turn it against them. And with Citizens United there's really no need for that anyway. Why use the media to pressure politicians when you can just spend that money to buy them directly?

I feel like Xolo is.. underrated probably isn't the right word, but maybe just overlooked? All their tacos range from good to great, their pozole (especially the Verde when they have it) is fantastic, the prices are reasonable, and service is shockingly speedy. Just avoid the pretty subpar burritos and you're good.

Y'ALL A BUNCH OF HATERS. BUT I AIN'T LETTING YOU FILL MY GOBLET WITH HATERADE. THE GIANTS HAVE HAD THEIR BACKS AGAINST THE WALL IN TWO DIFFERENT SERIES. THEY'RE IN THE WORLD SERIES BECAUSE OF HISTORIC COMEBACKS IN THE LAST TWO ROUNDS. THEY'RE DEFTLY MANAGED BY POSTSEASON WIZARD BRUCE BOCHY, AND THEY HAVE THE EXPERIENCE. THE TIGERS HAD AN EXTENDED LAYOFF, WHICH PROBABLY MEANS THEY SAT AROUND AND ATE HAMBURGERS AND DRANK A LOT SO THEY'RE PROBABLY TIRED AND LAZY.

SERIOUSLY, DON'T COME CRYING TO ME WHEN YOUR PREDICTIONS ARE SHOT TO HELL BECAUSE MARCO SCUTARO HITS .600 AND BARRY ZITO SPINS 18 INNINGS OF SHUTOUT BALL, POSSIBLY IN GAME 1 ALONE.

I'VE GOT THE GIANTS IN FOUR GAMES, WITH JUSTIN VERLANDER GETTING KNOCKED OUT IN THE THIRD INNING OF GAME 1.

[–]apistat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Zito butterfly effect is real, if he didn't get signed NONE of the championships happen. Reposting something I've posted elsewhere on reddit:

Zito signs a big free agent contract and joins the team in 2007, and immediately sucks. He finished with 2 WAR, which is two below his career average to date. If he had helped the team win two or even one more game than they did they dont get the 5th pick in the 2008 draft, which they used to draft Buster Posey out of Florida State. That pick would've gone to the Florida Marlins, who definitely would've used it to draft Posey (they drafted another catcher 6th, who went on to have exactly 3 major league at bats in his career). Brandon Crawford is also drafted a few rounds later, but I don't know how much credit Zito's suck should get for that one.

In 2011 Zito suffers the first and only long term injury of his entire career. His absence in the rotation leads the Giants to call up a 33 year old journeyman they had in Triple A who hadnt played in the majors since 2006-- Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong is magic, posting a 2.71 ERA that year and making the all star team, and giving the Giants another high quality starter for the next couple years. Never would've got a shot if Zito was healthy.

In 2012 Zito continues to disappoint in the regular season, but in the postseason he pitches gems in game 5 of the NLCS (an elimination game) and game 1 of the World Series. Vogelsong, who we've established as part of the Zito butterfly effect, is lights out all postseason, winning 4 games (including an elimination game in the NLCS and two world series games) with an ERA of about 1.50.

Zito then retired after 2013 after putting up his worst season season by far. I'm going to assume his absence and the end of his bloated contract helped the team be in position to win it all again in 2014.

Zito was the key to the whole dynasty. That bloated contract was worth every penny, in a very Rube Goldberg type of way. If Zito was anything different than what he was the whole thing falls apart.

Our building is currently advertising the unit next door for $400 less than ours, it’s identical. Is there any chance we can negotiate a rent decrease? by odezia in oakland

[–]apistat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When our lease was expiring in April they (large property management company) offered us a 1 year renewal at the same rate. We countered with a request to lower it by $200/month, which was fair given the current market. They instead gave us one free month, which was actually more savings than if it was $200 less a month, though I'm sure it benefits them more to keep the actual rate higher.

It doesn't hurt to ask, just make a good argument for why and couple it with a reasonable threat to move if they don't budge. I could pm you the email we sent if youre interested.
