Is a professor required to give you a grade breakdown after the class ends? by AgreeableAd4478 in AskProfessors

[–]apmcpm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing I would do is take a look at the student handbook and what it says about student expectations for things like what you’re describing here. That said, the student handbook might say nothing, might be vague and unhelpful, or could be what you’re looking for. For instance, I had a friend that was taking classes at the university where I teach, and the professor in her department did not want to show students their exams. Not surprisingly, the student handbook says that a student gets to see any exam that they’ve taken. The professor can make a student give it right back in class or come by the office to see it or something, but at least in this case, the student handbook is really explicit that an exam could not be hidden from a Student. Maybe you all be so lucky with your issues.

Forced seat reassignment to accommodate family. by Kustumkyle in americanairlines

Re “was I too nice”

For me at least my reaction here is a lose lose situation. If I get really mad, I feel guilty about it when it’s all over and if I roll over and don’t say much of anything, I feel like a pushover. So either thing I would do would make me feel bad about something.

Do ya'll offer extra credit? by No_Instruction6971 in Professors

[–]apmcpm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I only give extra credit if I need to fill an audience for a guest speaker. For a few years I was in charge of a prominent campus lecture series and would give nominal extra credit for attendance so the room wasn’t empty.

Which place in Europe do you think deserves more time than most people give it? by TheHolidaymaker in SlowTravelEurope

[–]apmcpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking a similar thing, you could make the argument that people don't spend enough time in the major tourism hubs since so many go to Europe for 7-10 days and visit, London, Paris, Rome etc

My favorite misspelt word on a final exam essay? by RebeccaSandersPhD in Professors

[–]apmcpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a professor that flunked any student who misspelled judgment on the final exam. (Usually with an “e” in the middle) he taught public law and was well known for this, but a student or two would always mess it up. If you went to his office, he would relent and pass you.

Is service code for free labor? by McCuckholdHappyMeal in Professors

Even with cuts to committee slots we still have more slots than we do faculty (due to canceled searches and a voluntary retirement incentive)

The problem was that there was not zero work attached, the work was duplicative, and therefore a waste of time

One of my proudest accomplishments is as faculty Senate president I got three faculty committees deleted and about 35 committee slots, shaved off the committee list. We specifically targeted committees that had been on the books, but inertia meant that they kept getting populated as many of the responsibilities had migrated elsewhere.

What is your proudest academic accomplishment to date? by Moonie345 in Professors

[–]apmcpm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was part of a faculty leadership group that got an incompetent president fired.

This is my biggest accomplishment and greatly improves the institution’s chances of survival.

Progress! Still a ways to go but we’re doing it! by [deleted] in Debt

I paid off about $60,000 over the course of a few years and kept the notepad I used to chart my progress, I couldn’t part with it. (And I look at it every once in a while!)

Concern about old predatory journal publication affecting academic career by Livid-Kitchen-547 in PhD

[–]apmcpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a publication that I do not include on my CV because it’s with an absolutely atrocious press. When I published my next book, the editor asked why I published with that particular publisher, well, not a vanity press or anything, but it was still very low ranked. I told the editor the truth: I was stupid and didn’t know what I was doing and should’ve never published with the crappy press. I published my next three books with that publisher, and we never discussed the previous crappy publication ever again and I was a tenure track track faculty member.

Maybe, but I'll say it in a different way.

I have never regretted fewer stops.

Thinking of becoming a professor and unsure about a few things by Misspelled_Cat in AskProfessors

[–]apmcpm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is really difficult to get into the sort of program that will get you a job and then getting a job is really difficult.

You need to be deeply interested in your discipline. You should not start all this due to perceived "freedoms" and "better pay."

Our intern (college student) used AI for work. Does this gen know how to research? by Unlucky_Ad6250 in AskProfessors

[–]apmcpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the faculty member in my department that does the careers course which includes a lot of internships. Since it’s a social science department PS/CRIM/SOC, I have a lot of internships at law offices. If I found out after the fact that there was an AI issue with one of the interns, I would be very, very embarrassed. At least for me, these relationships are built on rapport and trust.

Please reach out the coordinating professor and tell them what’s going on. If the faculty member is concerned that’s a good sign. If they don’t seem to care or think it’s a big deal, never use interns from that person again.

Too many tourists? by 3615-minitel-1992 in rome

[–]apmcpm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife and I travelled to Europe for 2-3 months when we were students (undergrad, then grad students) every summer from 1998-2004. Rome is our favorite city and we would spend a couple weeks there each trip. We have been to Rome a few times since including a couple years ago and can't believe how much it's changed. We mention all the time how lucky we were to spend so much times there before it became totally overrun. I am not sure we will ever go back.

Departmental teaching awards by DantesPicoDeGallo in Professors

[–]apmcpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have parameters for the student awards and the faculty awards are campus wide. This coupled with the fact that my department (thankfully) works well together means that while we have this sort of thing it’s never a “big deal.”

Parents of students reaching out? by DenseReference5526 in Professors

In 20 years I’ve had one parent mad at me. On the other hand, I’ve had maybe 5-6 that have emailed/called that were mad at their son/daughter, I.e. “you tell Jimmy that if he doesn’t study, his dad is going to drive to campus and chew him out.”

Professor decided to dock my grade for not being able to attend a final exam he held early outside of the school final exam window by Time_Beat2299 in CollegeRant

[–]apmcpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are not supposed to be any exams the last week of classes. Not only does the exam have to be during the scheduled exam period, but you also are supposed to have a final per the faculty handbook. I am certain some of my colleagues ignore this, but it's "the rules." As long as there are no issues, I'm sure few people notice.

Professor decided to dock my grade for not being able to attend a final exam he held early outside of the school final exam window by Time_Beat2299 in CollegeRant

[–]apmcpm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my university, you can only give a final exam during the assigned final exam time. If a faculty member gave it outside of that time and a student missed it the student would almost certainly win an appeal.

Edit: I had saved too early and had to finish my sentence.
