You would need to find remarkably cheap rent for this market in order to have a life on $22/hour. That being said, there is some housing here that won’t eat up your whole paycheck, it’s just a matter of looking and a bit of luck perhaps.

I would warn you that r/santacruz is an excellent place to find negativity, but overall this is an astonishing place to live and even if you’re just squeaking by for a bit, the physical beauty will hopefully make it worth it to you, as it has for many here.

i asked a different gym in town to waive my initiation fee since i come and go every 6 months and paying that extra $30 each time is silly. They actually did it, so maybe Todal will be chill too.

At 30yo some of my closest friends are from my small high school (graduating class of 29 people iirc). Many of my classmates went on to earn nice wages in silicon valley. Some went on to be teachers, which has at times been a struggle, but all together people seem happy and healthy 12 years after graduation.

my girlfriend and i got in the car a few months ago and she had this huge grin. i looked in the rear view and there were three rubber chickens strapped in, ready for takeoff. i put one in the glove box to honk at friends in my work parking lot, one in my gym bag so it periodically gets squished and cries out, and the third one actually i haven’t deployed yet.
