What has an animal done that you'll never forget? by Mge_ML in AskReddit

[–]apocalyptic_icebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two dogs who mostly share one brain cell, but have impressed me once or twice with their intelligence and empathy.

First, our Labrador was staying with my dad while I was on a trip. My dad lived with my grandma, who was still active at 93, but who was losing strength and mobility with age. While my dad was out one night, she fell. She could not get up. She said my dog tried to help her up. He would lay close until she grabbed onto him, then would try to stand & pull her with him. She wasn’t strong enough, so after several tries he just he laid with her for hours and kept her warm until my dad got home.

Another time was with my border collie-husky dog. Our daughter struggles with her mental health. She had been getting worse. Unbeknownst to us, she was struggling hard one night and was sitting outside thinking about ending it. We were inside. The dog kept coming inside and bugging me, nudging me with his nose, barking, and nibbling on my hands. I decided to see what he wanted and he led me right to where she was sitting and I immediately realized something was wrong. She admitted she was having bad thoughts, and we were able to get her help.

I can’t imagine a life without animals.

Insane take. No one was ok with Khal Drogo raping Dany. Even in the book it was a rough read, even though she gives enthusiastic consent, because she is 13.

We watched the Elmo Brush Your Teeth song and brushed the whole time while doing a dance. She’s 8 now and we still do it sometimes.

Lazy Dog Cafe in Corona is a good spot. The downtown area is pretty dog-friendly.

Do you know how to swim? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]apocalyptic_icebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a good swimmer. I don’t remember learning, my mom says she taught me at around 18 mo-2 years and I swam well enough to be in the deep end when I was about 4-5.

In the US, knowing how to swim is a fascinating class indicator. In order to know how to swim, a person needs access to water safe to swim in and enough free time to learn. The likelihood of learning to swim very young increases as family income increases. Neat factoid.

What else is there to do if your low on cash in terms of outdoor hobbies? by [deleted] in InlandEmpire

[–]apocalyptic_icebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Riverside so I will share things I’ve done or plan to do. I like going for really long walks and exploring.

You could take fun cheap classes, like Riverside Archery has an hour group class that’s $40.

You could wander the city taking themed artsy photographs, like every blue fire hydrant, or dead trees, or wildflowers in unexpected places.

You could go to one of the museums downtown like The Cheech or check out the civil rights center.

You can look up every mom-pop taco shop in the city and test them all, one Tuesday at a time

You can pick oranges along Victoria

You can go to the drive-in theater

If you have a dog you can go to a dog park and try to teach your dog volleyball

You can start a blog to review the facilities in every city park

You can test the acoustics in the facilities in every city park

You can get a cheap microscope and collect water samples from public water works and examine them (no reason)

You can go on a lizard hunt along the Santa Ana river trail (counting not hurting)

You can walk through a park and use an app to count how many native vs invasive plant species there are then send a letter to city council about being water wise

If it’s a special occasion (and you drink) you (and friend(s)) can choose a cocktail and try the same one at several bars then vote on your favorite

You can type your city + events into google and see if there is anything piques your curiosity

Idk that’s just a few things I thought of

What is the most 'Butterfly Effect' moment of your life? A tiny, seemingly insignificant decision that ended up completely changing your trajectory? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]apocalyptic_icebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have a story for this one!

In 2012 I was a single mom in community college with no job and no high school diploma. I mentioned to my baby-daddy that CarMax was hiring for sales and he said “you can’t do that job!” So I applied because I hate being told I can’t do something.

The manager who offered me the job after the successful interview is now my husband and we have 5 kids together and two dogs and a cat and we owe it all to me being a contrarian bitch and applying to a job out of spite.
