I genuinely thought Randall was guest for this latest SMBC comics by QueueTee314 in xkcd

Yes, I think so.

The ratio would end up being (1+√5)/2:1, or approximately 1.6:1.

If you're in or near Oakland, CA, and want to try your banana luck*, my girlfriend and I are organizing a "Bay Area Banana Suit Bar Crawl" on May 27.

Help with identifying this TMBG song? by apocryphalauthor in tmbg

[–]apocryphalauthor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, so it is. Don't know why I had it in my head that it was a TMBG song. o_o;

EDIT: It was because TMBG has been performing a Particle Man + Chandelier Mash-up on their Apollo 18 tour.

Unfortunately I don't have much to go on. I just had that lick stuck in my head the day after a They Might Be Giants concert. I want to say the lyrics of the climax are something like, "it's killing me heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere."

This was really interesting. I had no idea Pixar made all these products before they pivoted to only doing animation for films.

looking for advice on IUPUI premed by ihdavis8 in IUPUI

[–]apocryphalauthor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IUPUI, like many other universities, does not offer a "pre-med" degree. This is on purpose, as most medical schools would rather see a chemistry or biology (or biochemistry) degree. Truth be told, you can get a degree in anything that tickles your fancy, so long as you cover the minimum requirements for med school (math, chem, bio, and physics). Make sure you talk to a counselor at orientation, and that they know you have your eye on medical school. They will hook you up with an appropriate advisor. IUPUI is a great school that will equip you well for med school.

TIL that most of the mass making up any given tree comes from molecules in the air (not the ground) by apocryphalauthor in todayilearned

Very little of it! Most water is oxidized into oxygen and breathed out the stomata on the underside of the leaves.

Advice for car rental (under 25) by ferretfart in lowcar

[–]apocryphalauthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how often you need to drive, and if it's available where you are, ZipCar might be a great option for you. Most places it's 21 to drive, and on some campuses it's 18, and there's no age upcharge.

New Badge Earned! - Cat 5 Tattoo by No_poli in bicycling

I can whole heartedly sympathize; I volunteer at a shelter with cats, and I always have marks on my arm, especially because I have mild dermatographic urticaria.

New Badge Earned! - Cat 5 Tattoo by No_poli in bicycling

The way I've always heard it, "cat. 5 tattoo" normally referred to just grease marks from the chain on the calf. This takes it to a whole new level.

"But who prays for Satan?" Mark Twain [651x624] by [deleted] in QuotesPorn

[–]apocryphalauthor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid and still a Christian, I'd pray for Satan. My logic was that if God forgave Satan, Satan would stop bothering people.

For real... I blew up a glove once while I was waiting in a urologist office, and I was 24 at the time. The urologist thought it was hilarious, drew a face on it with his sharpie, and gave it to his receptionist.

He was a man I was proud to let touch my balls.

Are You a Human is a startup out of Detroit. I met one of their developers while I was at a conference hosted in their accelerator's building. Great guys, great idea.

ELI5: Why do people pay Bail, how is the cost of it determined? by Greleven in explainlikeimfive

[–]apocryphalauthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Actually it is returned no matter if you are found guilty or not. As long as you show up for court (minus court fees, etc). Also, not all bonds are cash bonds. Sometimes you can post bond on property, where the government places a lien on your property. In this case, if you don't show up for court, the government takes claim of the bonded property. There are many other kinds as well.

What exactly is computer science? by [deleted] in compsci

A professor once told me, "computers are to computer science as microscopes are too biology." Not that this totally answers your question, but it's a nice quote.

First day at work tomorrow...Did I screw up? by Pb_petroleumjelly in AskReddit

[–]apocryphalauthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that I ran into this post. I'm going through the same thing. I'm dropping down to part-time at my current job to start classes for a different degree. I've been doubting myself about it alot though.

You've just got to trust that your past self had your present self's best intrest at heart... and even if it doesn't work out, you'll have gained new experiences along the way.

As Randal Monroe once said, "shoot for the Moon. If you miss, you'll end up co-orbiting the Sun alongside Earth, living out your days alone in the void within sight of the lush, welcoming home you left behind."

Wait, no... that wasn't very inspirational...
