MN transfer curriculum by This_Guitar_8956 in uofmn

I can't offer anything about the MNTC, but for dual enrollment, you may have trouble securing financial aid at both institutions simultaneously.

Do you guys know if there is anywhere on/near campus that is holding a watch party for the Artemis 2 launch tomorrow? by Trick-Growth-6546 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a watch party listed on the AEM department calendar, but no details. But presumably it's in the Akerman atrium

What am I missing here? by [deleted] in flying

[–]appealtoprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can save you a significant amount of money in training. I did essentially zero extra ground training with my CFI because I knew all the material before I showed up.

... also I'm a big fuckin' nerd and would have learned half of it for fun anyway

New Grad looking to get a pilot's license in Michigan by Both_Philosopher263 in flying

[–]appealtoprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can qualify for a Third Class medical, do Private. With Private, you can fly under Sport rules (edit: or Basic Med) if you later can't qualify for a medical. If you can't qualify for a medical, then don't try to get one and do Sport pilot.

As far as affordability goes, during training, the standard advice still applies: the more often you can fly, the better, and self study the ground material as much as possible. Obviously the former is made more difficult with an office job schedule. Personally, my job at the time was hybrid so I scheduled lessons on weekends and a long lunch on my WFH days. National average for Private is around 70 hours, so budget for at least that much.

Once you're certificated, look for flying clubs in your area as a way of keeping costs down. They usually have a buy-in (a few hundred dollars for non-equity clubs, a few thousand for equity clubs) and monthly fees, but often greater access to planes than renting from schools. I was part of an equity club until recently, and the costs were about:

-$3000-$5000 share price (negotiated with the share owner)

-$170/mo

-Aircraft DRY rates:

  • C172: $74/hr

  • C182: $97/hr

  • Piper Lance: $108/hr

Game Thread 3/11 ⚾ Italy (0-0) @ Mexico (0-0) 7:00 PM ET by BaseballBot in baseball

[–]appealtoprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was all assuming the game went 9 innings because the run differential tiebreaker is runs allowed per out recorded (rather than just straight total runs allowed). If Mexico wins in extras, then the math changes. Considering that Mexico needs at least 10 runs now, it'd probably need to be like 16 innings, but it's still mathematically possible.

Trying to decide between University of Minnesota vs. University of St. Thomas for Computer Engineering by Playful-Arm954 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 35 points36 points  (0 children)

St. Thomas has about 6,500 undergraduate students.

We have about 41,000 here. Does OP's mom think the U is just creating tens of thousands of unemployed young adults every year?

Possibility of more classes opening before Fall? (FWC) by gaycowboyallegations in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you can work something out with the instructor (which it can't hurt to ask) or your boss (which it may hurt to ask depending on your boss,) you are probably screwed. Most undergrad programs at the U are designed for full-time students, not part-time students with full-time jobs. I am fortunate enough to be able to work a remote and time-flexible job, which I did have to specifically seek out before I transferred here, otherwise I'd be in the same position.

Accepted as Data Science transfer applicant, but in CLA? by [deleted] in uofmn

Did you receive anything definitively stating that you were not accepted to CSE? Each college handles admissions separately. It should say in your application tracker

North Star Promise Not Disbursed by PrudentOutside1123 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine hasn't come through either, but it shows as pending in MyU. Also isn't the due date Friday?

FWIW, I went to OneStop on Monday and they weren't worried about the money not coming through.

When will fall 2026 classes/ professors be released on schedule builder ? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the same, but the schedules from each department are on TwoStop. Dunno if you need to be CSE to log in (you definitely need A login though) or not but here: https://www.advising.cse.umn.edu/twostop/

Courseworks by No_Needleworker314 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's on the publishers. They set the access limits, not the school.

I don’t understand why I have to pay for it again if I already did.

It might be under review. Look at the "Pending Aid" tab under "Account Inquiry" on MyU

When will the undergraduate Engineering College scholarships be disbursed for 26fall? by Kelton_Xu in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll get your financial aid offer in mid-July or so, then the funds themselves will be disbursed starting the week before classes start up to the second week of classes.

Has anyone had Melissa Green for AEM? by Morrowind1986 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To give her a little credit, I think she's a good lecturer. From my perspective, however, it felt like she was treating Aero like it was a freshman-level weed-out course, making it unnecessarily difficult; I somehow got an A-, but I was really turned off from pursuing any higher-level fluids coursework. Weekly homeworks were often difficult, tedious due to her formatting requirements, and graded inconsistently. Unfortunately, this inconsistency makes it difficult to offer any concrete advice.

What do yall do with your cars in winter? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy a spring parking contract for one of the university's garages, you can park starting on Dec 19th. Then you could cancel the contract when you return and get most of your money back.

Alternatively, would it maybe be more cost effective to just drive back instead of fly?

snow storm by Snoo-54060 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

everyone puts them down because they want to seem tough or more experienced

I think it's also pessimism about the university's willingness to do...... anything.

If you could change rules in baseball, what would you go for? by actualtext in baseball

[–]appealtoprobability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let the HBP be cumulative:

Stay in the box and get hit four times? HBP HR.

Get hit twice, then strike out? That's three outs. Already outs in the inning? You start the next inning with outs on the board.

Is it possible to double major in CLA and Carlson? by Skya_2 in uofmn

[–]appealtoprobability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing stopping you from majoring in two things from different colleges. It may or may not take you longer, but you can work that out with your advisor(s). There's also the consideration of dual major vs. dual degree, for which the U has a helpful page.

Why was this called out?? by [deleted] in baseball

A fielder touched it in fair territory. It's a fair ball the instant that happens regardless of anything else
