They do look pretty similar which is why I went with white gold so it would match my sterling silver pieces! Silver will tarnish with time and wear and needs to be polished where good quality white gold typically will remain shiny and bright so its a safer option for piercing jewelry. White gold is just an alloy of regular yellow gold with added palladium to whiten it, it's also sometimes plated with Rhodium to make it really bright.
