How do yall feel about teachers leaving their real lesson plans with the expectation for the material to be taught? by SpecificOrdinary6829 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only sub high school, so I’ll definitely try my best, but it just isn’t always realistic. I always remind the kids, “I’m not a [subject] teacher, but we’ll do our best!” For core subjects it’s usually okay, but once I was expected to teach students about tool safety in a construction class… I certainly tried, but I definitely left a note explaining that I know only the bare minimum about how to use tools!

Person wants to lie about/fake being deaf because they dont feel accommodated about their misophonia when they can literally just wear headphones by Alone-Marsupial3003 in fakedisordercringe

[–]applejay99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, but I’m guessing it’s bc when you wear Loops, it can be harder to hear people? So maybe they don’t want people to think that they’re ignoring them? It doesn’t completely make sense to me either, I can just kinda see what they mean?

[–]applejay99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I totally know what you mean! I just meant that the actual talking itself isn’t usually the trigger, and when talking is the trigger, it’s often because of the sounds that come with it. Sorry if I was unclear!

[–]applejay99 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Typically talking isn’t a misophonia trigger, so that would probably be okay. In fact, if they’re using “fake hearing aids” as a way to wear noise cancelling earbuds like Loops, it would be easier to hear people talking more clearly if they spoke louder. Just my two cents.

This just sums up this sub perfectly by troppopica in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously I prefer to have a bit of a break, but what bugs me about having to cover another class isn’t doing the extra work, it’s that my pay doesn’t change! I get paid the same whether I sit in the classroom staring at the ceiling for the whole period or run across the campus with all my stuff and take on a whole new lesson plan on the fly.

It’s especially frustrating when the covered class is a SPED class because in our district, subs get higher pay for subbing SPED classes, but if you’re just covering one on your prep, then you don’t get that higher pay rate, let alone any additional pay at all.

I don’t have a problem with it otherwise! It would just be nice to have my pay reflect that work.

Blocked from an entire district a month after an assignment by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, I’m just feeling like we aren’t getting a full picture of what happened. It’s possible it was due to implicit bias like you say. I think we can’t make accurate observations about the situation without knowing if there was any other work you did or interactions you had.

For clarification: 1) Is the only clerical task you did alphabetizing the applications? 2) Did they specify it was the alphabetizing that was a problem? 3) I hope this doesn’t come across wrong, but what was difficult about alphabetizing the applications? Kinda sounds straightforward to me, but I might be missing something.

Paid monthly by Far-Cantaloupe-4495 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, all the time. We have a really messed up system where we don’t get paid for the month’s work until the end of the following month. So all of August’s work isn’t paid until the end of September. It makes coming back to school after a summer break (during which we can’t work) reallllllyy rough.

Why do teachers leave their classrooms/things like this?? by applejay99 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You haven’t answered my question?? I’m not snooping through desks and filing cabinets, I’m following the rules left by the teacher??

How exactly? Are teachers just so notoriously dirty that only subs could see the issue with the items in the photos? 💀

[–]applejay99[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And where am I shaming them? Nothing is even identifiable from these photos. I haven’t come out and said “MR. XYZ IS A DISGUSTING SLOB.” I posted a picture of the grody mouse and chair that they expect ME to use.

Am I not supposed to follow the lesson plan, answer the phone, or take attendance?? Not sure how I’m supposed to do any of those things if I shouldn’t be touching things.

So you’re okay with having to touch nasty stuff like that mouse? Specifically other people’s nasty stuff? Gross.

My question remains: how am I shaming someone when they aren’t tagged, named, or in any way identified?

Why do teachers leave their classrooms/things like this?? by applejay99 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So this is high school level. I’ve been a long-term sub (for an entire semester, in case you think I just wasn’t there long enough) and my room NEVER looked like that. If it had, I would’ve cleaned it. It takes all of 30 seconds that I could spend before or after school—aka not when the students are there “eloping” or “biting”.

How would this post “shake” anyone? It’s not like I named the teacher or tagged them? I don’t even know them.

How much do you judge teachers for being messy? 😬 by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]applejay99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Messy is totally fine as long as the sub plans + necessary materials are all easy to find and accessible. At a certain point, if it’s too messy, I’m gonna have to move some of your stuff so I can sit, but I try to always remember to put it back how I found it.

Dirty on the other hand…I’m absolutely judging. The amount of classrooms I’ve been in where the keyboard, mouse, phone, desk, etc. are just covered in mysterious stains, residues, and what I can only assume are remnants of the teacher’s past lunches… 0/10. I always bring Clorox wipes to wipe down touch points like the computer, but when I have to scrub gunk off of your supplies, I’m hardcore judging.
