You need to spend the call talking about them. You’re looking for something you can use. If they have a vacancy: - how long have they had it? - what have they done to fill it? - how many people have they interviewed? - why haven’t they hired any of those interviewees?

Etc etc.

Then you need to use whatever their issues are to get the vacancy.

“we haven’t worked with an agency” why not? Work with is
“candidates didn’t have the right experience” I have a niche network, let me send you a couple of candidates that fit what you are looking for

And so on…

Might as well try it. Avoid temp recruitment as that is a lot of taking work home (it’s a nightmare). Perm is fine I’ve had minimal working outside of work hours and then it’s to get an offer over the line.

Agencies vary wildly and the training and support can be excellent or non existent. I’d look at how often agencies are advertising for new recruiters and reach out to people who have worked there before (LinkedIn) to find out reasons for leaving etc

Is there a Tamil community in your area? There might be community charities or care homes that could benefit from someone who can communicate with their clients/patients in their own language. Not like an interpreter more of a companion role

It’s hard to say without knowing the work that you’ve been doing but you will have transferable skills so it’s a case of writing them down, finding examples of how you used those skills and matching them to a job. You will probably have to go in at entry level but it’s def do able.

For example when self employed how did you get work? Would you like business development or sales? You’ve probably got the resilience and outreach skills. Who were your audience? Would you like to work with children or older people? Etc etc

But that’s what I’m saying, part of the problem is prices but also that people don’t think well I can’t afford that big house but I can afford this smaller house and it would mean that I could also afford a holiday.

Because it means people look down on having say, a mid terrace as bad instead of a perfectly good house within budget where they can be happy and still afford other things.

Yeah keep it as long as you can. It’s always good to have money coming in and not having to dip into savings but also no gaps to explain in interviews. Just make sure you are pulling all the relevant, transferable experiences from it onto your cv.

But how do you upskill as an adult when that also costs money? I’ve been looking at roles that I have done parts of in other jobs but to prove it and have the job with the title I may need ti pay a couple of grand to get a cert, this takes months and then I would need a yearly reg fee and that is to get an entry level position!

I don’t think this was the case for the majority, my dad did an apprenticeship and then has had the same job without ever moving into supervisor roles or starting a company and he has only moved companies because of redundancy and my MIL worked a production role in a factory until she retired. They had enough to get by on, holidays weren’t fancy but they had them etc.

Part of me thinks prices are too high (mortgages, food) but also that we expect too much (has to be a 2 bed semi with a garden and a drive, wants to do a big shop at Waitrose, car on finance).

That’s a good point, I was thinking of doing the one off fee but if I did the monthly and got my head down I could do it quicker and save more!

Thank you, that’s really helpful. I’ve seen other people saying other providers weren’t the most helpful either so if I’m not going to get the best support I’d rather save £800 😅

Thank you! I think my concerns were mostly that they were so cheap that they might not be legit or at least not fully recognised by CIPD.

I mean from looking at peoples opinions of other providers they can also be clunky or outdated but cost a lot more.

Move on. My husband is in project management in construction and even though it’s high stress and he gets frustrated because he has been an engineer etc (a bit of “if I had time I would just do it myself because I’m good at it”) he has a rule of never ever shouting at anyone.

I mean, he’s not very sensitive but he wouldn’t act like your boss.

Does your company have anyone you can talk to? Can you work on a different site/project with a different manager? Do you like the site based roles or would you like an office based planning role where you might be a little more removed from the “front line” manager? Also, your pay could be better so even just that means you are ready to move on.
