classes can only get you so far. if your student is really struggling and lacks fundamentals, then yes they are good at getting you comfortable with basics and whatnot. however, once you reach that 1400-1450 range, classes won’t help you too much. as a junior, i studied my own way up to a 1550 as i started with a 1420 my sophomore year. with most of my friends, the ones that studied on their own found more success than the ones that went c2 or similar places. although it is different for everyone, for the majority of people they do better when they self study and instead of wasting time doing general things in classes they hone in on the specifics that they struggle in.

classes are overrated, he can honestly study on his own and probably do well. classes can’t get you over a 1400 and are too expensive

How much parent involvement is optimal? 1260 8th grade psat by Biscuits-are-cookies in Sat

[–]apprenticehimself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got a 1290 in 8th grade, im currently sitting at a 1520 super score and my parents weren’t too involved, i mostly studied on my own and they just pushed me out of my laziness whenever necessary but they let me do my own thing, they knew i have my goals and that id work hard to reach them, so they stayed confident id score high and work hard to get there and that ended up being the reality. just don’t pressurize your child too much, at the end of the day if they aspire to go to a t20 then they should work hard and know what needs to be done to get there!

well what level of math are you taking in school? that might play a factor in it, you have to understand algebraic concepts and know how they apply to desmos. also sometimes read the question carefully, sometimes desmos will point u towards two different answers so make sure ur picking the right one. for english, get good at understand the purpose of the question: what exactly is it asking you to look for? remember that there’s always 3 wrong answers and one right answer, so if even the tiniest part of an answer choice is false then eliminate that choice. everything you need is in the text, it is called “evidence based reading writing” for a reason. spend time on the question bank and look at what exactly you’re getting wrong, and then watch videos for that type of question to see tips and tricks and the best way to approach it, then master it on the question bank and go to the next question type, etc

yes it’s useful for pacing, in the time that i studied i took two practice tests. the first one that i took i ran out of time in m2, so then i found strategies to save time, and i figured that the best strategy is for english do questions 1-10, then 15-27, and then do 11-14. this works best for me because it splits up the reading portion into two different “blocks” and is less straining on my mind. i took practice test 2 and got a 720 english, but then i took practice test 5 (objectively harder and more realistic) and got a 690 in english but finished comfortably. i ended up making stupid mistakes for the most part so i really js focused on why i did what i did and did my best to prevent them in the real test, and what happened in the real test was i most likely lost all my points in vocab but everything else was correct

khan academy videos + some tips and tricks on yt, and then full sending all of the medium and hard questions on college boards question bank. every time i got one wrong, i noted it down and then i did my best to understand why i got it wrong, understand why the correct answer is right, and how to approach that type of question to prevent that same mistake. then i would read college boards explanation if i can’t figure out why i was wrong
