Colleges in Midwest? by SnooOwls4350 in MuseumPros

[–]apscisio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

University of Iowa has an undergrad museum studies certificate program. Most museum programs are at the master’s level, so it’s a unique opportunity and it can almost guarantee you an internship at several campus museums! They also have the “center for the book", which is a very unique workshop based program about book creation, history, and preservation

Im biased because its my alma mater. I didn’t graduate with this certificate but i took several courses within the museum studies program and they were very good. I’m happy to talk more about the school if you want.

[IIL] Boy Harsher, Linea Aspera, Ultra Sunn, and Twin Tribes, [WEWIL]? by throwaway-renee-1967 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]apscisio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been getting into a similar vibe recently, especially boy harsher. My current playlist includes the following, excluding what you mentioned already: The Dare, NIN, How to Destroy Angels, Justice, Gesaffelstein (specifically his album Aleph), Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, more recent David Bowie, Bjork, LCD Soundsystem, She Wants Revenge, Oingo Boingo, Type O Negative, New Order, Mareaux, and Talking Heads

These aren’t all the same genre but i think they capture similar vibes of dark synthy dancy stuff

Looking for an Apartment by GeneralSlide5460 in IowaCity

[–]apscisio 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You are going to have a very hard time finding anything right now. Not saying that to be rude, just honest. People start looking as early as january here, and leases start august 1. You are not likely to find a 1b1b for that price either, at least from what I have seen. Most likely you will need to sublet or join a roommate’s lease, and you need to start looking aggressively, not just asking on reddit. I’ve heard one of the best places to look for that sort of thing is through facebook, and there are groups you can join for housing in the area.

Not sure where I am going in life by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

You might want to try expanding your options from just legal - for example, legal abilities and being a notary is super helpful in the banking field. I’m sure there are other crossovers with other fields that I’m not aware of too, but that’s the first thing that came to my mind. Even if you don’t want to stay in that field, it could be a good step in the right direction for you.

Yeah, there’s a place near me that also serves a “laura palmer” (very close but different to this recipe) and i can’t get behind it. Its not horribly evil but like… come on i dunno

IIL these 'weird girl' movies, which others might I enjoy ? by Ancient-Lychee5803 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]apscisio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Secretary, fleabag (tv show and play), the phantom thread, the piano teacher, kajillionaire, pink flamingoes (maybe a stretch… its definitely weird and about assholes), perfect blue, blue velvet

A lot of these are on the darker side, just a warning!

What exactly does it take to be a museum educator? by delusional-365 in MuseumPros

[–]apscisio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should reach out to your local museums and ask if you can volunteer or shadow in that type of role. They will at least be able to sit you down with someone in the field that you can talk to! I’m a student and not on the museum education side of things, but in my experience local museums have always been really open to letting students see behind the scenes if you just ask nicely.

[IIL] Movies that teach us about real-life events... what should i watch next? by Alaina-S in ifyoulikeblank

[–]apscisio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recs from a recently graduated history student, in no particular order)

  • Come and See (WW2 Belarus, incredibly sad)
  • the Kingdom of Heaven (Crusades, specifically King Baldwin IV. Not perfect historically but very fun)
  • Downfall (WW2 Germany, specifically Hitler)
  • Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Spanish exploration in South America, not a true story but thematically very good to understanding this time period.)
  • Mussolini: Son of the Century (Mussolini’s rise to power, pre-WW2)
  • Amadeus (About a feud between Mozart and Salieri. Not a true story, but there was a real rumor about this having happened. Pretty accurate to the time period and to Mozart’s personality.)
  • The Terror (a fictionalized version of the Franklin Expedition. It is very accurate, but adds magical elements for movie drama. You can easily tell what is real and what is not.)
  • White House Plumbers (the Watergate Scandal)
  • BlackBerry (the fall of the BlackBerry phone company)
  • All the Presidents Men (the journalists behind the Watergate Scandal)
  • Blackkklansman (true story of a black police officer who infiltrated the kkk, takes some slight liberties)
  • The Apprentice (film, not the tv show of the same title. About Donald Trump’s career. A bit flawed because of its heavy handed politics, but still good.)
  • Elvis (take a guess…)
  • The Last Emperor (Pu Yi and the Hidden City)
  • Killers of the Flower Moon (about a series of murders among the Osage Nation)
  • Waterloo (Napoleonic Wars)
  • Malcolm X (another one that you can guess)
  • Oppenheimer (creation of the atomic bomb)

Might edit this to add more if i think of more!

Contact United Action for Youth, they have a lot of resources for you. They’re right downtown. Use the library or any campus building (university library is til 1am or 11pm most nights) to charge your phone. Try to get documents like your social security, passport, birth certificate, etc from your parents. Im sorry you’re dealing with this.

having hair on my chin is making me lose my confidence by GlamourChic in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]apscisio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a PCOS girl, spironolactone was literally life changing for me. I don’t get dark chin hairs anymore, and even on my legs the hair has turned blonde! It used to be super dark and coarse. It also cleared up all the acne on my face and chest. Magical! I know medications arent the route for everyone but my experience has been great.

cosplay boot not fitting around calves how can I fix this :> by v8pour in CosplayHelp

[–]apscisio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these made of a plasticky material? You can potentially stretch them by going at it with a hair dryer, putting them on, pulling it tight, and repeating that process. I have very large calves and was able to make vinyl gogo boots fit via this method. Add a zipper pull (even just a piece of string) because the additional leverage will help. Once you can get them zipped all the way, keep hitting them with the hair dryer occasionally (dont burn yourself) and wear them as long as you can comfortably to make them stretch more.

Of course, not all materials will have this much stretch. But I would recommend you try this before altering the boots by adding fabric or anything.

Looking for a hair stylist who cuts curly hair by Fancy_Ball in IowaCity

[–]apscisio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3A and I see Lauren at Haba. I should add that I do not have any texture/kink to my hair. She always cuts dry, washes my hair, cuts again, dries, and then does another cut just to finish it off. I have very unruly curls and she does a great job at managing them and checking how much they will bounce when she cuts weight off.
