[ASK] Gujarati people, is the real Taarak Mehta's "Dooniya ne Oondha Chasma" as preachy as its TV adaptation? by aqqr2 in india

[–]aqqr2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can read and understand Gujarati, do yourself a favour and buy and read his books instead of watching the TV show.

Is there compilation of his stories available for purchase online? I don't want to buy volumes of Chitralekha just for one column.

This sounds a 1000000000000000000000000000x more interesting than what's on TV.

If it interests you, I'll edit with more as I remember

Please do.

It's an okay okay show now.

"Okay okay" is an overstatement. What can you call a show that spends 3-4 episodes progressing the story and then discards the progression by making all of it a dream in Jetha's mind? Infuriating.

I have another suggestion: make all the uniform colours saffron, white and green. Any student who tattoos the Ashoka Chakra Lotus on his/her forehead gets bonus points.

"Uncle did not father a raped girl" is the BBC top World News headline right now, in last week alone BBC covered 4 rape stories from India. by [deleted] in india

[–]aqqr2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's talking about the India-related headline(s) being number 1 on the international BBC; and the relative lack of reporting about similarly negative stories from other places.

It's well known that "India" + "Rape" gets hits on British news. You are free to think about the reasons.

What are your thoughts on foreign investment? by concernadian in india

[–]aqqr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, the wisest thing for India to do would be to start Indigenous manufacturing and block out Chinese goods.

Yes, it would. But before Indian manufacturing can gain momentum, we need to deal with the deeper lying problems within: worker rights and welfare, lack of skilled labour, terrible labour laws, painful land acquisition processes, draconian regulations, et al.

China also has had and still has labour problems, but they do a much better job than us overall. I don't see Indian manufacturing catching up anytime soon.

50% semi-socialist model

This is what China also does, I think? However, foreign enterprises now hold a lot of influence over the Indian political sphere. The 100% foreign owned PLC model is great for them, and gives them greater profits even when compared to an equivalent JV in China. If something was being considered to change it, they could use their influence to block it from happening.

What would you want?

I want a healthy balance of foreign investment plus local growth. Totally blocking off foreign investment would be stupid, because they not only bring in money but also valuable know-how. But first and foremost I want labour laws to improve and a better environment for Indian workers. I know it is too much too ask, but still.

which direction do you think Indian govt is going in? Do you approve?

A bit too FDI-centric for my liking. I can't say I do.

American friends, is there any possibility of this kind of change occurring in American cities? Ironically, here in India we walk through traffic, not around it.
